HAMMOCK CULTURE SWINGING IN PROSPECT PARK

The hammock culture was out strong in our beloved Prospect Park this past weekend. My dear friend, I’ll call her Madame E, was positively agape at the plethora of them. She is caught up in the hammock culture. Yes, there is a hammock culture, just as there is a Furry culture. And just as there are online forums for the Furry culture, there are online forums for the hammock culture. Some even mention setting up hammocks in the deep bowels of Prospect Park’s woods, the same woods where someone I know (let’s call him Yo Poppa), had to pick up hundreds of used condoms for his DUI community service.

Some of the hammocks spotted this weekend were far off the pedestrian path in the long meadow and concealed by trees, as if not to draw much attention to them. Others were blatantly flashing their ropes for all to see, right off the path in densely populated areas. Madame E explained why she was taken aback by the sight of so many hammocks:

Whassup: Out of Danger Edition

via daniel kurtzman at politicalhumor.about.com

Well, phew, everyone -- the Danger has passed. With Carlos "Anthony" Danger "Weiner" failing to crack 5% in Tuesday's primary vote, all I can say is: good job, all of you, in voting for the non-penis-texters (that we know of). With Brooklyn's favorite son likely in the political rearview for good now, at least we can say he went out with class. Anyway, your civic duty fulfilled, it's time for the weeklong post-election, Weiner-withdrawal afterparty. Welcome to Whassup: Out of Danger Edition:

* Thursday, Sept. 12: Songwriters Circle, Jalopy (Red Hook): Jalopy debuts its new songwriters circle, with a bunch of local favorites like Feral Foster, Kerri Lowe and more each performing two songs, round-robin style. Come fall hopelessly in love with, like, 15 people. 9pm, FREE.

* Saturday, Sept. 14: Donate Books, Park Slope Library: Given that you live in Park Slope, chances are you have a bunch of books you always intended to read so you'd sound more impressive at brunch. But, let's face it, HBO keeps making shows, so those dead trees are just space-hogs in your tiny apartment. Do something good with them by donating to the Friends of Park Slope Library for their book sale, which takes place Sept. 28 from 11am to 4pm (with a pre-sale Sept 27 from 5pm to 7pm). You can donate today or again on Sept. 21. Out of respect for your books' feelings, try to at least have your Kindle out of view when packing them up. Donations accepted 10am-5pm.

EXCLUSIVE! Jackie's Fifth might not close after all?

We've reported, or, rather, lamented, the closing of Jackie's Fifth Amendment on this site, before. Jackie's--the quintessential dive bar, and one of the few remaining in Park Slope--announced recently, that they were going to shutter on September 14. In case you don't have your calendar in front of you, I'm here to tell you that September 14 is Saturday.

GhettoTracker is back!

GhettoTracker.com made the news (by which I means the blogs) last week for being overtly racist. The website featured the picture of a beautifully average white family and promised to help you find the “ghetto” parts of town, so you could avoid them. In an attempt to avoid the bad press, the website renamed itself goodpartoftown.com but otherwise remained unchanged. Towards the end of the week, the website had been replaced by a message that simply read, in Times News Roman font, “This site is gone. It’s not worth the trouble.”
