Whassup: Halloween Edition

via Earth Art

Show of hands, how many of you are already wearing your costumes? Ok, you can put your hands down. I can't really see them -- this is a blog. And, anyway, you're gonna need every single one of your hands for grasping candy, carving pumpkins, and pointing at the sexiest/funniest/most-falling-apart costumes you see. Mask up, because it's Whassup: Halloween Edition:

* Thursday, Oct. 27: Tales of the Creep, Union Hall: Wear your favorite costume and a pair of boxers you don't mind shitting. Ghost stories are scary enough, try hearing them on several pints of Checker Cab. This night of goose-pimple narration ends with live music by The Living Kills and others. 7:30pm Doors, $7.

Whassup: Not Quite Halloween Edition

Today, he's coming for the leaves. Next week, for your candy (via potcoplayers.wikia.com)

I know we're all busy shortening the skirts on our sexy nurse costumes and pasting real dog hair on our wolfman masks, but take a break from Halloween prep to get in on some Slope-area fun this week. You can even wear your sexy/scary cat/devil costume to most of them. Heck, all of them. Welcome to Whassup: Not Quite Halloween Edition:

Friday, Oct. 21: CMJ Show: Hallelujah the Hills, Rock Shop: CMJ is all up in this, folks. Do you have too many shows you want to see? Could you not give two shits less? Either way, you might as well saunter over to one of the Slope's best venues to check out the indie bombast of multi-instrumentalled Hallelujah and the Hills. That way you can impress that cute NYU undergrad by naming a fave CMJ show (not really). Packed with a horn section and more, these dudes have been compared to big bands and Arcade Fire. 7pm Doors, $10.

Whassup: Fall Harder Edition

via funnyartpictures.com

So, I guess by now we can agree that it is fall. The leaves are dying beautifully and pumpkins everywhere know that they shall soon either be stabbed and gutted or left to rot. Also, the temperature dropped. So, no excuse anymore to go outside in a t-shirt and shorts like some Californian. Put on a jacket and look presentable while you enjoy Park Slope's offerings. It's Whassup: Fall Harder Edition:

* Friday, Oct. 7: The Mekons, Bell House: Punk grandaddies The Mekons have the same sort of semi-nerdy, semi-badass underground cred as the '60's, British cult-hit sci-fi comic to which they owe their name. And don't ask, we're all probably better off not knowing what that comic was. This band has roamed from punk to punked-out country western, so it'll be a buffet of well-aimed power chords. Oy. 8pm, $18.

Whassup: Broken Hearted Edition

via poptower.com

This is apparently the week of mad scrambles for tickets to fucktastically awesome shows in small venues. On Monday, Radiohead tix to Roseland evaporated in a New York min-- (well, you know). And within a couple hours, one of FIPS' favorite venues, the Bell House, announced that comic's comic Louis CK would do two shows on Friday. Tix go onsale that same morning and should be gone nearly as quickly. How many tears must we, with our disgusting #firstworldproblems, cry over refreshing purchase screens in one week? Well, luckily there's always other fun shit to do 'round here. Welcome to Whassup: Broken Hearted Edition:

* Friday, Sept. 30-Sunday, Oct. 2: Brooklyn Country Music Fest, Hank's Saloon: Were you aware that Brooklyn has a country music scene? Don't be surprised. You know we're all from somewhere else, anyway. And lots of those somewhere else's have steel guitars. Alex Battles, a Cash-voiced cowboy with a sense of humor, heads up the scene, and the festival. This year, it stomps its spurred boots at Hank's Saloon, just before the charmingly (maybe?) grimy Boerum Hill institution succumbs to gentrification. Check out the full lineup and times here. FREE.

Welcome to Whassup: We Might Not Be Giants Edition

via robot6.comicbookresources.com

As we hurtle along into pigskin season, it's important to remember: you live in New York Fucking City, specifically Park Fucking Slope (ok, less badass sounding) -- there's a helluva lot more to do than sit around watching large men smash each other on bigscreens. So, venture away from couches facing Eli Manning. Welcome to Whassup: We Might Not Be Giants Edition:

* Sept. and Oct.: NEW Classes, BK Brainery: The Carroll Gardens center for grey matter calisthenics has a fresh, new platter of learnables for the Fall. Learn about factory fires or post-apocolyptic New York -- you know, after the zombies/asteroids/Cloverfield/Rick Perry devastate us. But let's be honest: Brainery is really a chance to make up for not asking out that cute girl/guy in freshman comp. Various costs and times.
