Whassup: Not Quite Halloween Edition
I know we're all busy shortening the skirts on our sexy nurse costumes and pasting real dog hair on our wolfman masks, but take a break from Halloween prep to get in on some Slope-area fun this week. You can even wear your sexy/scary cat/devil costume to most of them. Heck, all of them. Welcome to Whassup: Not Quite Halloween Edition:
Friday, Oct. 21: CMJ Show: Hallelujah the Hills, Rock Shop: CMJ is all up in this, folks. Do you have too many shows you want to see? Could you not give two shits less? Either way, you might as well saunter over to one of the Slope's best venues to check out the indie bombast of multi-instrumentalled Hallelujah and the Hills. That way you can impress that cute NYU undergrad by naming a fave CMJ show (not really). Packed with a horn section and more, these dudes have been compared to big bands and Arcade Fire. 7pm Doors, $10.
* Saturday, Oct. 22: It's My Park Day, Prospect Park: Got a couple park events for ya' this week, so you can enjoy the crisp fall weather before we slide into the slushy, water-heater-busting misery that is winter in NYC. First up, you can join a raking and cleaning crew in bagging all (or some) of Prospect Park's crud. That way, it'll be nice and fresh when the snow melts and chirping young indie bands return to the band shell. 10am-2pm.
* Sunday, Oct. 23: Fall Color Tour, BK Bridge Park (Pier 1): Few things die as beautifully as leaves. Yeah, that's right. I am even snarking on fall color. So, come on, you death aesthetes, head up to DUMBO and gawk at pretty mortality. You can even take pictures. A scientifically informed guide will talk at you about pollination, leaf coloration, and other botanic tidbits. 11am-11:45am.
* Tuesday, Oct. 25: Scary Episodes, Bell House: Ah, the Halloween episode. Monsters and blood are such good material, even the way-past-its-prime Simpsons still usually rocks the spooky shows. Well, Bell House staple TV Party reaches back to the '90's for REALLY good Simpsons Halloween episodes -- as well as fare from Saved by the Bell, Will Smith, Pete and Pete -- holy shit! Pete and Pete! -- and more. Per usual, the TV Party hosts will lead sing-a-longs, contests, trivia, and other nostalgia-heavy group activities. 7pm Doors, $5.
* Wednesday, Oct. 26: Science Stories, Union Hall: The Story Collider is what happens when right brains meet left brains and make beautiful, beautiful brain love. This month, six speakers share stories on the theme of genes -- those things we can all thank and/or curse for our looks, smarts, and tooth alignment. Taking to the stage this month: a Columbia memory scientist and essayist, a UCB comedian, one extremely genetically blessed model, and more. 8pm, $10 DOS.
