Whassup: Fall Harder Edition

via funnyartpictures.com

So, I guess by now we can agree that it is fall. The leaves are dying beautifully and pumpkins everywhere know that they shall soon either be stabbed and gutted or left to rot. Also, the temperature dropped. So, no excuse anymore to go outside in a t-shirt and shorts like some Californian. Put on a jacket and look presentable while you enjoy Park Slope's offerings. It's Whassup: Fall Harder Edition:

* Friday, Oct. 7: The Mekons, Bell House: Punk grandaddies The Mekons have the same sort of semi-nerdy, semi-badass underground cred as the '60's, British cult-hit sci-fi comic to which they owe their name. And don't ask, we're all probably better off not knowing what that comic was. This band has roamed from punk to punked-out country western, so it'll be a buffet of well-aimed power chords. Oy. 8pm, $18.

* Saturday, Oct. 8: O'Death, Bell House: Not to stroke the Bell House bells too much in one week, but they've got a pair of kick-ass music shows this weekend. Batting cleanup for the Mekons are Brooklyn's own backwoods, hillbilly yelpers, O' Death. These guys holler (mostly) on key, frequently shirtless, and their churning crowds always join right in. Bring a shirt you don't mind ripping off. Bring vocal chords you don't mind shredding. And some hooch in a jug. It's that kinda show. 8pm, $10.

* Monday, Oct. 10: Sexy Stories, Union Hall: Did you know that laughter stimulates the same regions of the brain as an orgasm? Now, I may have just completely made that up, but you should still check out "Bare: True Stories of Sex, Desire and Romance," wherein four comedians and storytellers will have you in ecstatic hysterics. Park Slope's favorite sextorium, Babeland furnishes a toy to be raffled off to one lucky, horny audience member. 8pm Doors, $5.

* Tuesday, Oct. 11: Baby Food Skillshare, Tea Lounge: This might just be the most Park Slope event ever -- a coffee shop, middle of the day, where you learn to make baby food. Let's just go ahead and assume all the gourds and whatever they puree will be from the Co-op. If you're into that, the Skillshares can be fun. For the rest of you, let this serve as a warning: the Lounge oughtta be even more choked with double-wide strollers than usual this Tuesday. 3pm-5pm, FREE.

* Ongoing: Barbes needs a piano: Hey guys, you know Barbes? That Frenchy looking little hole-in-the-wall beneath the tanning parlor on 9th? That place constructed, I'm pretty sure, entirely from old mandolin wood and charm? Well, the ten-year-old piano that spills classical, jazz, and more from their sickeningly cute performance space is dying. And they need a new one so that the children may have music. If anyone has a lead, go poke or message them or something.

COMING UP:

* Oct. 18-22: CMJ: It's almost here, everyone -- five days of poorly prepped sound equipment, sweaty NYU undergrads, and bands your music-snob friend insists you HAVE to see. It's CMJ, fuckers! Centered in the Village on that island across the river, CMJ also has shows out Brooklyn-way, including at Union Hall and the Rock Shop. Individual shows vary by price. The full pass will eat about $500 out of your beer money. So, I don't recommend that route.
