New Restaurant Coming to Park and Flatbush

Photo via Here's Park Slope

Here's Park Slope reports that the storefront construction at Park and Flatbush is going to be a new restaurant called "M Helen" (which makes me think of Mount St. Helens: "Our Lava-licious mac and cheese will EXPLODE in your mouth!)

"It will be a "farm to table" restaurant, featuring "fresh comfort food," HPS says. Yum.

Cheese, Glorious Cheese: Valley Shepherd Creamery Coming to the Slope!

Photo from allthingscheese.com

Hey you, the people of Park Slope who eat cheese: it’s time to throw out your Velveeta shells and Kraft singles. We've got the real shit coming to town.

Valley Shepherd Creamery will be filling up the empty space where Compucell used to be at 211 7th avenue. In addition to over a hundred artisanal products, pastas and lamb meat, they'll offer around 35 cheeses hand-milked from a combination of 700 sheep, goats and cows. You know, I really gotta hand it to these guys: that’s a lot of fucking nipples.

Sweetwolf's: Tim & Eric's Awesome Show?

Is it possible to be everything to everyone?

If Tim Judge & Eric Wolf, the co-owners of Sweetwolf's have their way, they'll be able to pull it off. You may remember Sweetwolf's --  the new restaurant opening tomorrow at the corner of 6th Ave & 12th Street -- as the restaurant that, back in June, held a contest on their Facebook page. They asked for a lil' class participation from y'all, requesting that you suggest dishes that YOU'D like on their yet-to-be-developed menu.

Now that fall is here, the menu and the restaurant have taken shape, and Tim & Eric are finally ready to open the doors. I recently stopped by to chat with them about Sweetwolf's and what it'll be bringing to the neighborhood. As a bonus, I also got to meet Matt Marks, who's bringing Forty Weight Coffee to Sweetwolf's and running a coffee shop out of the joint during the morning hours.

Park Slope Residents Worried That Proposed Bar Will Ruin Our Children

Left photo via Save the Slope

Park Slope businessman Luis Cordero is invading quiet, residential, upstanding Sixth Avenue. He's intent on bringing ruin to children, families and church goers. How? By opening a motherfucking sports bar. At least that’s what the residents trying to stop Cordero from opening this bar are claiming. Here are some choice quotes from The Brooklyn Paper from such protesters:

“Do we want our kids to see this when they come out of day care?”

“We see what alcohol does to individuals and families... Now it’s dividing this community”

“A bar here would be a real aberration and a lot of lives would be affected.”

And, my favorite: “This is a place to get drunk while eating chicken wings.”

Fleisher's: Now Open!

OK. So let's talk about vegetarianism for a moment...

Do you believe that eating animals is wrong because humans have no right to assort our superiority over another species?

Do you shun meat because you think that supporting the corporate meatpacking industry, with its usual filth & shitty standards, is tantamount to murder?

Have you given up meat for health reasons? Maybe you’ve watched a documentary or two?

Personally, for as long as I can remember, I've hovered dangerously close to vegetarianism. In fact. my FIPS profile describes me as "78% vegetarian." For years, I've limited my red meat-eating to once a month if that. My diet usually features a ton of veggies & a bunch of chicken and fish (usually in sushi form) & the occasional "fuck, I’m broke" McDonald’s burger. When you can't guarantee the origin of your meat & sort of have a conscience, it makes opting for a veggie dish all that easier. To be honest, dishes not loaded with meat often taste better.

I mention all this because yesterday marked the soft opening of Fleisher's, the butcher shop at 182 5th Ave that, prior to today's opening but based on the reputation it's gained from their Kingston, NY shop, has many already considering them "Brooklyn's best butcher."
