Battle For Brooklyn Needs Oscar Money

Battle For Brooklyn, the feature length documentary about the controversial Atlantic Yards project that's OHMYGOSHTHISCLOSE to being an Oscar contender, needs our help. The 8 year-long project has endured costs while qualifying for a golden statue, and filmmakers Suki Hawley and Michael Galinsky are looking for outside support:

We need to make an expensive Digital Cinema Package ($6,000 for that alone!), advertise, travel, and hire publicists.  At a bare minimum, we need to raise 9K.  100% of the money raised will go towards our efforts to bring the film to as wide an audience as possible.

As of this post, they've raised $3,478 of their $9,000 goal, with only 14 more days to go. If you'd like to donate, please do so HERE

A FiPS Guide To Holiday Movies

When it comes to holiday movies, we've got way to many choices these days: It's a Wonderful Life on NBC, Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer on CBS, some Lifetime movie about a strong woman overcoming a large emotional obstacle around Christmas time starring Meredith Baxter, no doubt. But let's face it -- we can't spend all of our holiday vacation watching movies. We need to devote some of that time to napping or trips to the mall for returning lame gifts (I'm lookin' at you, low-carb cookbook). So we here at FiPS have each selected our favorites, which we present, should you be looking for some typical (and no so typical) holiday movie suggestions. Enjoy, and have yourself a merry little whatever you celebrate this time of year

Battle For Brooklyn Getting Close to the Oscars

Photo: Tracy Collins

Is our nabe headed to the Oscars? Maaaaybe. Battle For Brooklyn, a feature length documentary about the controversial Atlantic Yards project, is one of fourteen films currently in the running for an Oscar nomination.

Husband and wife filmmaker team Suki Hawley and Michael Galinsky spent eight years carving over 500 hours of footage down into the feature length documentary, which has won numerous festival awards, including this year's Rooftop Films Summer Series Official Selection (you can read our FiPS review of the film HERE).

[FIPS WAS THERE...] 'Ghostbusters' at Brooklyn Bridge Park

New column alert! We here at FIPS spend a hell of a lot of time out and about in Brooklyn, attending outdoor concerts, comedy shows and various other events. So [FIPS Was There...] is where we're gonna' talk about all this shit.

Last Thursday, a few of my besties and I made the trip over to Brooklyn Bridge Park for our first outdoor movie of the season. The flick showing that night was Ghostbusters, the 1984 classic starring Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Sigourney Weaver, and a baby-faced Rick Moranis (note to self: Netflix Honey I Shrunk The Kids immediately).

If you haven't been to an outdoor movie at Brooklyn Bridge Park, you have plenty of opportunities -- the Syfy Movies With A View series runs every Thursday night through September 1st. Here's a few tips:

Mookie Does Red Hook

A rumor surrounding Spike Lee's latest production, which is filming in our very backyard, has been leaked: Mookie is back, y’all. Via Blackfilm comes the news that Spike’s character from the classic BK film, Do The Right Thing, may be appearing in a new movie no so creatively named Red Hook Summer.
