Brooklyn Gets (Rolling) Stoned

via justwilliam1959.wordpress.comAs the man with the enormous lips said: "You can't always get what you want." This is especially true if what you wanted was to scuttle the Barclays center and, for instance, stay in your home and/or business that was inconveniently located in the arena's footprint. But sometimes...sometimes...you get what you need. "What you need," henceforth, can be defined as a bloated, corporate tour from the grandaddies of the dinosaur rock groups.

Yup, the Rolling Stones are saying hello, Brooklyn.

On on Dec. 8, they will be interrogating brown sugar, re: it's tastiness, and encouraging the starting up of themselves from our borough's gleaming new basektballetorium. The big shows just keep rolling in at that place, don't they? This'll be the only NY show on the band's upcoming tour, since they've neglected MSG in favor of Newark's Prudential Center. So yeah, Manhattan, how does it feel? To be on your own? Completely and utterly unlike a Rolling Stone? (I apologize profusely for that.)

Tickets go on sale Nov. 19 at 10am. Maybe you like to spend lotsa money on old, dancing singing men?

Whassup: Money for Good Edition

via thesis.jrbaldwin.com

The deep-blue Northeast got a reprieve yesterday, when Barack Obama broke Karl Rove. And then we got another "NorthEasterner" (or whatever the fuck you call them) to put a harsh on that electoral college buzz. Here's hoping the hardest-hit areas don't get socked again. Either way, they could all still use help, and you can even lend a hand by drinking, thanks to several benefit shows. Welcome to Whassup: Money for Good Edition:

* Sunday, Nov. 11: Lady Lamb, Glasslands: One of my favorite Brooklyn-based performers will share her surprising pipes at Glasslands. Everyone I've taken to see Lady Lamb the Beekeeper comes away kind of adoring her, and the songs are pretty killer. 8:30pm, $18-22.

* Monday, Nov. 12: Brooklyn Relief, Union Hall: A whole host of local comedians, storytelllers, musicians, and other artists will offer up their talents to the Brooklynites who got the worst of Sandy. 100% of the proceeds go to groups helping with recovery -- the Red Hook Initiative and the NY Communities Hurricane Relief Fund. 8pm, $20.

A FiPS Guide To Election Day Events!

There are three things that you shouldn't do alone in this world: drink, change a light bulb WHILE drinking and watch presidential election results come in. So in addition to giving you a guide to voting in the 'hood, here's a list of some fun things that you can do tonight while waiting for Obama, er, the best candidate to claim victory.

1. THE RAGING ELECTRIC 2012 ELECTION VIEWING PARTY: THE BELL HOUSE 7:30 PM -- FREE

Join comedian host Liam McEneaney and DJ Mike Doughty for a night of presidential drinking (specials includeCoke & Rumney, the Bahamobama Mama, and the Four More Beers ) and plenty of good eating (The Korilla BBQ Truck will be just outside!) in the GIGANTIC beautiful space that we call The Bell House.

2. ELECTION NIGHT 2012 FUNDRAISER (COME BE SOUR WITH US)MISSION DOLORES, 7PM

In addition to having some great drink specials, which include $2 OFF select Red, Blue and Swing State Beers AND the best sour beers in Brooklyn, all proceeds from the evening will be donated to the Red Hook Initiative. Mission Dolores also has a game plan for its patrons depending on who wins the election: IF ROMNEY/RYAN WINS, everyone gets a shot of the cheapest bourbon they have! IF OBAMA/BIDEN WIN, everyone gets a shot of Bulleit Bourbon, and IF THE NIGHT ENDS IN DISPUTE OR UNDETERMINED, everyone gets a shot of 4 Roses Bourbon.  Not too shabby.

Whassup: Still Going Edition

via digitalconfetti.wordpress.com

Well, wow. Sandy was not a dud -- I guess we can say that much. Park Slope has been relatively unscathed; though, the overall damage and infrastructure loss suffered by the city have caused some event cancellations. Still, Slope bars and venues keep on drinkin' on. Thus, we bring you (with the caveat that more cancellations may occur) Whassup: Still Going Edition:

* Thursday, Nov. 1: Auster-DeLillo (+ Foer!), BK by Book: Confirmed (via Twitter, of course) as being still on, the conversation between Paul Auster and Don DeLillo will also now welcome Slope wunderkind (is he still young enough to be called that?) Jonathan Safran-Foer! The superstars of print will have deep and serious and literary things to say about New York and disaster and the human soul, and their books will be marked by not only their signatures, but by your tears. 7:30pm, $10.

* Thursday, Nov. 1: CasHank Hootenanny Jamboree, Freddy's: Since whoknowswhen, people have sung together to band together when the weather and the world are against them. And there are few performers around here more joyful than Alex Battles, who runs herd on this olde-tyme country sing-and-play-along. Tunes are drawn in particular from Johnny CASH and HANK Williams (hence the name). Bring any instrument, or just your boots and your voice and your clappin' hands. 8pm, FREE.

Whassup: Fright Week Edition

via yellowpelow.com

This Halloween, I really want to scare people -- so I'm dressing as Paul Ryan's belief system. Boo! Now, clean out your magic underwear, and let's get down to the serious-as-a-zombie-apocolypse business of planning your Halloween celebrations. And, as you might expect, there's a whole (unholy) host of pumpkin-day shit to do 'round here. Welcome to Whassup: Fright Week Edition:

* Thursday, Oct. 25: HallowMEME Costume Party, Bell House: The Bell House has the funnest, kitchiest events, so it's no surprise they will be pleasing your Internet addictions this Halloween with a meme-based costume contest. I say go old school and be the "All Your Base Are Belong to Us" cyborg dude. 8:30pm Doors, 10pm Costume Contest, FREE (RSVP here).

* Saturday, Oct. 27: Zombie Cash, Jalopy: Live music is old hat. For Halloween, you need living dead music. Zombie Cash covers the Man in Black as if he had come back from the dead. Hey, Delia's back! 9pm, $10.
