Whassup: Still Going Edition

via digitalconfetti.wordpress.com

Well, wow. Sandy was not a dud -- I guess we can say that much. Park Slope has been relatively unscathed; though, the overall damage and infrastructure loss suffered by the city have caused some event cancellations. Still, Slope bars and venues keep on drinkin' on. Thus, we bring you (with the caveat that more cancellations may occur) Whassup: Still Going Edition:

* Thursday, Nov. 1: Auster-DeLillo (+ Foer!), BK by Book: Confirmed (via Twitter, of course) as being still on, the conversation between Paul Auster and Don DeLillo will also now welcome Slope wunderkind (is he still young enough to be called that?) Jonathan Safran-Foer! The superstars of print will have deep and serious and literary things to say about New York and disaster and the human soul, and their books will be marked by not only their signatures, but by your tears. 7:30pm, $10.

* Thursday, Nov. 1: CasHank Hootenanny Jamboree, Freddy's: Since whoknowswhen, people have sung together to band together when the weather and the world are against them. And there are few performers around here more joyful than Alex Battles, who runs herd on this olde-tyme country sing-and-play-along. Tunes are drawn in particular from Johnny CASH and HANK Williams (hence the name). Bring any instrument, or just your boots and your voice and your clappin' hands. 8pm, FREE.

* Friday, Nov. 2: M Shangai String Band , Jalopy: Amidst the shitty, shitty flooding that's hit Red Hook, Jalopy Theatre and Tavern has been a refuge -- offering up free meals and warm space and collecting cleaning supplies to distribute to those with flood-damaged first floors and basements. And, the theatre's soldiering on with shows, too, as M Shanghai, featuring the frenetic harmonica of Shaky Dave (among many other talented musicians) plays Friday. 9pm, $10.

* Saturday, Nov. 3: Stache Bash, Littlefield: Regular programming returned to Littlefield yesterday, for their Halloween show. So, the 'field should be all right and dry by Saturday -- and, if it's not, all those mustache brooms should whisk away the moisture toot suite. Come, Brooklyn, experience the strength of manly facial hair. It will give you courage in these troubled times. 8pm, $5-$10.

* Saturday, Nov. 3: Wasabassco Burlesquaversary, Union Hall: You know what we all need to cheer us up post-Sandy? Tattas! The Slope's resident burlesque company celebrates six years at Union Hall with their LAST SHOW at the venue. It's some classic boobery, replete with all the boas, pasties, and false eyelashes you didn't see enough of on Halloween. 9pm, $20.

* Sunday, Nov. 4: Marathon, 4th Ave: Word has it , the Marathon will proceed as planned; though it's likely many runners will be unable to make it to the starting line. Of course, these folks are probably kinda determined, seeing as how they've trained to run 26-some miles JUST TO SAY THEY DID IT. Come cheer them on from the comfort of a not-exercising-at-all body. Check it out: the route runs right up 4th Ave. in Park Slope.

* Tuesday, Nov. 6: Raging Election, Bell House: Several shows this week were cancelled, but the Bell House announced they suffered little damage, thanks to some preparatory sand-bagging. The election-night party will happen, and let's hope it gives us Northeast Blue Staters something to cheer about after a very rough week. 7:30pm, FREE.

* Wednesday, Nov. 7: PunderDOME 300, Littlefield: Luckily, as mentioned above, Littlefield barely missed a beat. Because, where would we be as a Borough, as a City, as a Civilization, without puns? We'd be no better than the animals, wallowing in our own, unclever filth. Assert your humanity and clap wildly at dad jokes all the live-long night. It's what PunderDOME is for. 8pm, $6.

* ONGOING: Volunteer! A few Slope-area spots have been putting out the call for volunteers, as Brooklyn and greater NYC punch our way back out of this hurricane-shaped hole. Both John J High School and the Armory YMCA have been serving as shelters and accepting volunteers. Or see our round-up from earlier in the week, and be sure to check with the organization that they're still taking us temporarily good-hearted NYers as volunteers. Also, Brooklyn Bridge Park, home to the carousel that so amazingly glowed amidst the floodwaters, has been setting up volunteer cleanups. Keep an eye on their feed for the next one.

* COMING UP: Nov. 25: Fundraiser, Bell House: The House's Facebook page announced plans for a fundraiser to aid the Sandy cleanup. Stay tuned to their webpage and social media feeds for more details.
