Whassup: Money for Good Edition
The deep-blue Northeast got a reprieve yesterday, when Barack Obama broke Karl Rove. And then we got another "NorthEasterner" (or whatever the fuck you call them) to put a harsh on that electoral college buzz. Here's hoping the hardest-hit areas don't get socked again. Either way, they could all still use help, and you can even lend a hand by drinking, thanks to several benefit shows. Welcome to Whassup: Money for Good Edition:
* Sunday, Nov. 11: Lady Lamb, Glasslands: One of my favorite Brooklyn-based performers will share her surprising pipes at Glasslands. Everyone I've taken to see Lady Lamb the Beekeeper comes away kind of adoring her, and the songs are pretty killer. 8:30pm, $18-22.
* Monday, Nov. 12: Brooklyn Relief, Bell House: A whole host of local comedians, storytelllers, musicians, and other artists will offer up their talents to the Brooklynites who got the worst of Sandy. 100% of the proceeds go to groups helping with recovery -- the Red Hook Initiative and the NY Communities Hurricane Relief Fund. 8pm, $20.
* Tuesday, Nov. 13: Whiskey Coke Reading, Freddy's: Communities, as we've seen, are vital -- both when banding together after a disaster and when organizing to elect someone who's not a rich, white guy. They're also vital for the arts, and here's a thriving community of local writers and performers, sharing their work in a wonderfully drunken monthly gathering. 8pm, FREE.
* Tuesday, Nov. 13: Pat Kiernan Trivia/Sandy Benefit, Union Hall: For its "Anything but Politics" trivia show, hosted by NY1 anchor Pat Kiernan, TrivWorks will donate 100% of ticket proceeds to Sandy efforts. Come along, and be both a smart-ass AND a good person. Anything is possible in this new America. 8pm, $15.
* Wednesday, Nov. 14: The Who, Barclays: One of the things that comes with an arena in the 'hood: access to the dinosaurs of rock. They're old as hell now, but so are the rest of us, so let's all rock our geriatric asses off together. If the whole Barclays thing sounds like too much (or if, understandably, the Ticketmaster fees sound like too much), you could always just go look at posters of The Who and allied British lads in their heyday at Chip Shop. 7:30pm, $40-130 (before fees).
* Wednesday, Nov. 14: Imagine Science Film Fest, Bell House: The Bell House has become the place to go in Park Slope/Gowanus to get drunk while learning about science. I'm not sure how many applicants there were for that title, but there it is. Tonight, the Secret Science Club partners with the Imagine Science Film Festival for "Controlled Experiments," a series of short films all about or inspired by the science. Get your nerd swag on. 8pm, FREE.
* Wednesday, Nov. 14: Literary Red Hook Benefit, Littlefield: A pretension of authors (that's the term for a grouping of writers), including pop-culture philosopher Chuck Klosterman, will read their words at your ears in order to send money at Red Hook. It's all good: learn things and help people who need it. These are the things that make a life worth living and a single person worth fucking. 8pm, $50.
