Whassup: Celebrating Brooklyn Edition

via BRIC

If you didn't see it, yesterday, BRIC finally 0 Comments for this summer's Celebrate Brooklyn series in the Bandshell. I say "finally" not because I'm inpatient and spoiled for free entertainment in this city…wait, yes I am. Anyway, I've been forecasting the arrival of summer on Whassup for some time now -- because winter is a dreadful, slow death that saps my will to live. Also, free music! But I think, for Park Slopers, nothing signals summer quite like the Celebrate Brooklyn series. At least, for me, nothing does. So, go ahead and plan your pretentious Brooklyn picnics outside the gates. Welcome to Whassup: Celebrating Brooklyn Edition:

Whassup: Yes, You May Edition

via twicsy.com

I hope you all successfully abandoned ship yesterday (get it??). My apologies, but May is ripe with day-related puns. Today's Whassup photo is but one example. On the 4th, your nerdier friends may (no pun intended that time) reference certain space-based trilogies. Then there's "drinko de mayo." (Learned something in college, after all.) It's no "Rocktober," but it'll do. Welcome to Whassup: Yes, You May Edition:

* Friday, May 3: Adam Yauch Park Naming, Palmetto Playground: Timing is still a bit murky, but word is they will officially rename Beastiy Boy MCA's childhood playground as Adam Yauch Park on Friday. This weekend marks a year since Brookly, hip-hop, Tibet, and the world at large lost Yauch to cancer.

Whassup: Summer Is Coming (Really) Edition

Nevermind the ridiculous rises to July temps and vertiginous falls back to January weather. We really are upon the summer season. Know how I know? Big ass music festivals. Crossing Brooklyn Ferry hits year two (see below) this weekend. Soon, the food and (improved) music of Googa Mooga Twooga will be here and you'll be hanging out outside the bandshell gates. Before you know it, Brooklyn will be emptying out as everyone heads to Pitchfork. So, toughen up against the weird weather and just put on some shorts no matter what. Welcome to Whassup: Summer Is Coming (Really) Edition:

* Now PlayingJalopy radio: The hands-down best combination music school/instrument repair shop/olde time theater in located next to the BQE will now broadcast its wholesome charm over the ether. More precisely, over the system of tubes known as the Internet. Yep, Jalopy gots a radio station, broadcasting online. Now you can listen to fiddle music from the comfort of your own cramped NY apartment.

Whassup: Keepin' On Edition

http://www.brooklynfreeclinic.org/community/tedmed-2013/

As The Onion put it, "This What World Like Now." But it's also true that, as people say, the best response to terrible shit is often to keep on doing things like normal. So, Brooklyn, keep on attending weird events and drinking expensive craft beers in "dive" bars. Because this is what we do. Welcome to Whassup: Keepin' On Edition:

* Friday, April 19-Sunday, April 21: BK Folk Festival, Bell House: A bunch of banjo-wielding flannel wearers will turn Brooklyn all rootsy for the 5th Annual BK Folk Festival. Put on by Red Hook's Jalopy Theater, this year's edition expands to the Bell House for greater fiddlin' elbow space. Check out Whassup's personal favorites: old-school country Alex Battles and the Whiskey Rebellion on Friday, deep-voiced chantreuse Mamie Minch on Saturday, and the (literally) world-champion whistling of The Whistling Wolves on Sunday. 7pm Fri, 1:30pm Sa, 2pm Su; $15-$30 daily, $80 3-day pass.

Whassup: Summertiiiime Edition

via hilarious-pictures.blogspot.com

Summer in NYC blows in all like, "What? I was hanging out in Florida, but now I'm back and I'm all in." So, we got to remember what NYC subway tunnels and NYC asscracks feel like when the sun is hot: namely, gross and moist. And the livin' is easy! So dream big of all the Prospect Park BBQ smoke you're going to inhale and all the shouted conversations that will drift through your window -- It's Whassup: Summertiiiime Edition:

* Thursday, April 11: Cringe, Freddy's: It's Freddy's premiere event, the airing of middle school grievances. Come hear the awkward hilarity of teenage journals, poetry and fan fiction, read by those now old enough to laugh in merely mild shame at their former selves. 7:30pm-10pm, FREE.

* Friday, April 12: Carter Family Project, Jalopy: Brooklyn musicians Fran Leadon and Leigh Anderson wear their parent-status a bit on the sleeve, which is soo not FiPS-cool. But, whatever, they play Carter Family songs with pure joy, and it's great fun to see.  8pm, FREE.
