Whassup: Summertiiiime Edition

via hilarious-pictures.blogspot.com

Summer in NYC blows in all like, "What? I was hanging out in Florida, but now I'm back and I'm all in." So, we got to remember what NYC subway tunnels and NYC asscracks feel like when the sun is hot: namely, gross and moist. And the livin' is easy! So dream big of all the Prospect Park BBQ smoke you're going to inhale and all the shouted conversations that will drift through your window -- It's Whassup: Summertiiiime Edition:

* Thursday, April 11: Cringe, Freddy's: It's Freddy's premiere event, the airing of middle school grievances. Come hear the awkward hilarity of teenage journals, poetry and fan fiction, read by those now old enough to laugh in merely mild shame at their former selves. 7:30pm-10pm, FREE.

* Friday, April 12: Carter Family Project, Jalopy: Brooklyn musicians Fran Leadon and Leigh Anderson wear their parent-status a bit on the sleeve, which is soo not FiPS-cool. But, whatever, they play Carter Family songs with pure joy, and it's great fun to see.  8pm, FREE.

* Friday, April 12: Juliet Strong, Tea Lounge: You know how you're always at the Tea Lounge, trying to work on your novel* (*best Facebook comment) or apply for jobs* (*craft the perfect OK Cupid email) and some performance starts happening at you? Well, those things can actually be pretty decent, so why not go hear one on purpose? Check out the bluesy folk-sining of Juliet Strong. Pair it with a cappuccino in case you hate sleeping. 9pm-10pm, FREE.

* Saturday, April 13: Free Grilled Cheese, Brooklyn Slate (Red Hook): The three most beautiful words any human being can say to another are "Free Grilled Cheese." Say it to someone you don't loathe this Saturday and then take them to Brooklyn Slate's new Red Hook store, whose opening will be marked by the provision of free deliciousness. Noon-4pm, FREE.

* Saturday, April 13: Big Tree, Union Hall: Poppy, warm and expansive, it makes sense that Big Tree left NYC for San Francisco. That kind of joyful noise is just more California than Brooklyn. But it'll do us hardened East Coasters good to hear it. Plus, did you hear? The sun came back. 10pm, $10.

* Sunday, April 14: Barman's Fund Anniversary, Freddy's: Amidst the exceedingly weird videos, the divey decor and the DIY punk artwork in the backroom, Freddy's is a soft-hearted bar. They've been very active in the Barman's fund, through which bartenders raise money for charities. That endeavor turns two this year, and Freddy's is hosting a blow-out the Freddy's way: lots of drink specials and lots of drinks. So come get drunk and be a good person, even if you get mean when you have whiskey. 8pm.

* Wednesday, April 17: Stonewall Honors LGBTQ Women, Bell House: Gay rights have become remarkably fashionable as of late, with all sorts of formerly craven politicians jumping on board now that it seems safe. So it's a good time to remember the early struggles of Stonewall, the namesake of this event honoring women in the LGBTQ community. 7:30pm, $100-$500.
