Whassup: Yes, You May Edition

via twicsy.com

I hope you all successfully abandoned ship yesterday (get it??). My apologies, but May is ripe with day-related puns. Today's Whassup photo is but one example. On the 4th, your nerdier friends may (no pun intended that time) reference certain space-based trilogies. Then there's "drinko de mayo." (Learned something in college, after all.) It's no "Rocktober," but it'll do. Welcome to Whassup: Yes, You May Edition:

* Friday, May 3: Adam Yauch Park Naming, Palmetto Playground: Timing is still a bit murky, but word is they will officially rename Beastiy Boy MCA's childhood playground as Adam Yauch Park on Friday. This weekend marks a year since Brookly, hip-hop, Tibet, and the world at large lost Yauch to cancer.

* Friday, May 3-Saturday, May 4: Great American Roots Stomp, Union Hall: It's a mini-fest of roots music, with bluegrassy Union Street Preservation Society joining other befiddled boot stompers on night one and South Slope roots rawkers Barnyard Brothers and others on night two. Do some squat thrusts beforehand so your thigh is up for all the slappin'. 8pm, $10 (each night).

* Saturday, May 4: Kentucky Derby: It seems the Derby has become a strangely Brooklyn thing. I think it's because hipsters like old clothes, and the Derby is all about Gatsby-wear. And now that Leo's doing just that on the Baz Luhrman big screen, even more reason to get all classic. Look for celebrations and race viewings at Union Hall, the Bell House, and, in the South Slope, Greenwood Park's Brooklyn Derby. Reputed Kentucky bar Commonwealth usually shows the race, too.

* Saturday, May 4: MCA Day, Littlefield: If you miss the parkification of Adam Yauch (see above), there's still a way to party in honor of the man who fought for your right to do so. DJs will be spinning Beastie Boys tracks, with video and art of Yauch and the Boys on display. 11am, FREE.

* Sunday, May 5: Badass Dogs' Block Party, President b/t Nevins and 3rd: You live in Park Slope, so you proooobably like dogs, or at least tolerate their ubiquitous presence. Which, as far as the dogs are concerned, equates to love. So, act upon that love by coming to this fundraiser for the Badass Dogs doggie shelter. I'll pet you behind your ears and call you a good boy. 11am-7pm, $10-$50.

* Sunday, May 5: Guactacular, Bell House: If you don't love guacamole, I weep for you. That must be a shitty life. But for the rest of us, there is this greatness that occurs: the Guactacular. Now on year five, they're making it an all-day affair. You can get in on the afternoon show, which is the familiar guac competition, come in the night-time, when local restaurants will guac it up, or lay down for an all-day pass. It all depends how much green stuff you want inside you (which is also Slimer's worst pick-up line. Or best.) 2pm, $15-$28.

* Tuesday, May 7: Women's Personal Safety Seminar, PS Academy Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu: The rash of feel-copping weirdoes from a year or so ago seems to have died down, but it never hurts to learn some personal safety, especially in a city this size. It's free, too, so this is mostly a community service. 7pm, FREE.
