Couple That Lost Wedding Savings to reBar Talks with FiPS

image via Sarah Bibi Gainer

Park Slope couple Katie Jarvis and Ranjan Mukhopadhyay walked across the Brooklyn Bridge, and through the park in DUMBO, on their first date. They did the same thing the day he proposed to her in September 2012. So reBar’s location was perfect for their upcoming wedding on July 26th. Owner Jason Stevens offered an all inclusive wedding package that took a lot of the pressure off their shoulders. The food was great and the aesthetics suited their style. They wanted to throw a “party with our friends,” said Ranjan, and reBar was the right place for it.

They booked the restaurant and paid the $20,000-plus bill over the next few months. Then last Friday Katie heard from a friend in the bridal party that Gothamist was reporting reBar had closed. The couple went to a local bar directly from work, shell shocked. “I know there are so many bigger problems in the world,” Ranjan said, “but I’ve never cried so much. I’ve never seen my fiancée cry so much.”

Caption This Park Slope Photo!

The Brown Harris Stevens office on 7th Ave. between Union and President has this cool, electronic, interactive screen that lets you search real estate listings right there on the street. Last week, FIPS caught two neighborhood tweens checking out what's on the market. What kind of place do you think they're looking for? Share your FIPS-iest caption in the comments.

WHASSUP: Try New Things Edition

What do you get when you combine two evenings in Gowanus, some old subway trains, a bunch of hippies, and body science? An awesome fucking week of merriment, that’s what. I have curated perhaps the best, most obscure collection of local shit to do. You’re gonna want to thank me now.

So WHASSUP? Ch-ch-check it out:

Thursday, 5/15, Current: Gowanus, Gowanus Loft: Free is my favorite flavor, so I pride myself in bringing you lovelies quality free offerings. Local art for view and sale, painted with mud from the banks of the Gowanus. “Is he joking?” You’ll just have to find out for yourself. Free, 12pm-8pm

Friday, 5/16, Bosley, Union Hall: My criteria for handpicking events is dependent on a number of different factors. This particular offering reminded me of that shittastic infrared hair comb. Oh yeah, and the music sounds like a blast. $10, Doors 8pm, Show 8:30pm

Saturday, 5/17, Tongue in Trees, Barbés: This is some fantastic, hippy shit. I’m talking a serious, wavy gravy, tie-dyed, tree tonguing, flower fest. Grow out your hair and don your dashiki.  $10, 8pm

Worth it? Two-fer Cocktails Across BKLYN This Summer

Image via bklynpassport.comSummer is fantastic. Despite the sweltering subway platforms and high electricity bills, people are simply happier when the weather is nice. You meet your friends for poolside sangrias, Coronas at Jacob Riis Beach, steins in high-spirited biergartens or just some bad chardonnay out of a plastic cup in The Park. Yep, the summer season with all its jubilant imbibing is upon us. Whenever I want a professional cocktail though, it’s still the only city commodity whose sticker shock hasn’t really worn off: 12 bucks and up still makes me wince. Luckily there’s a company out there looking to put a little extra shine on my summer but still keep some cash in my pocket.

This is the Brooklyn Passport. No, we’re not seceding, it’s a promotional item that gives you two-for one drinks at 20 bars across Brooklyn for the duration of the summer, from Labor Day to Memorial Day. I first read about this in the Village Voice, and what they neglected to mention, which rather dampened my initial rush of enthusiasm, is that you can only use the passport once at each bar (‘Only one special per venue!’ their website cheerfully declares). Dammit.

Credit Card Skimming in the Slope: Part Two

Last week, we reported about an apparent increase in credit card skimming in Park Slope, which seemed to center around a certain establishment on Fifth Avenue. The response was overwhelming, with many people noting that they, too, had found multiple fraudulent charges on their credit cards in recent months. Here are the replies from Twitter alone:
