Credit Card Skimming in the Slope: Part Two
Last week, we reported about an apparent increase in credit card skimming in Park Slope, which seemed to center around a certain establishment on Fifth Avenue. The response was overwhelming, with many people noting that they, too, had found multiple fraudulent charges on their credit cards in recent months. Here are the replies from Twitter alone:
In the meantime, we received several additional emails from people saying this has happened to them, as well, implicating other businesses in the neighborhood. We don't feel comfortable naming them, given that it's hearsay (try not to seem so shocked that FIPS has some sense of standards), but suffice it to say that one of them is a large, reputable chain store.
I found an article from The Wall Street Journal's Market Watch blog, which tells you how to spot a skimmer. But, is that enough? What about when you go to a restaurant and hand your card over to your server who disappears with it for a few minutes? How paranoid do we really need to be?
