The Science of the Supercollider

There was the time when the particle-accelerating Superconducting Super Collider didn't work out. It was 1993 & Congress & Clinton were scared of science & thus decided to stop the construction of a particle accelerator complex in Texas. 'Merica don't need no ding dang particle 'celrater figurin' out black holes & tramplin' on the Yellow Rose! Switzerland currently houses the current, updated version of the Super Collider.

There was the time when Radiohead released a song called "Supercollider" that was probably made with the SuperCollider programming language or some shit.

There was the time in 2013 when a new bar called "Supercollider" opened up on 4th Ave & 17th in Brooklyn, on an area of 4th Ave that's QUITE devoid of bars.

There was the time I went to Supercollider with friends & probably drank a few too many craft beers.

[Throwback Thursday]: Little D Eatery

It seems like every day brings the death of another long-time Park Slope institution. With this new Throwback Thursday column, the old-timer FIPS writers are going to get all fucking nostalgic about some of their favorite places that used to exist here. We'll welcome guest submissions, too, so if you are seriously missing Snooky's or Mooney's and need to write about it, send us an email at effedparkslope at gmail dot com.

Hey, do you know what I could eat the fuck out of right now? Little D Eatery, near Toy Space on 7th Avenue & 15th Street. But Little D hasn't been there since 2009.

Hindsight is 20/20 and I suppose I took D for granted. It was my first devastating Park Slope food loss. I was young and naïve. I never saw any of D's imperfections while I was walking around in a hazy glow of Coca-Cola Ribs. I would find myself smiling the morning after I tried hen of the woods mushrooms for the very first time ever. I hadn't even known they existed! D blew my mind like that on so many occasions. Sure, I had eaten biscuits & gravy for brunch before, but never like that. And I don't know that I ever will  again.

WHASSUP: It's Officially Summer Edition

The solstice has come and gone—Summer has officially begun. You have precious little time to soak up vitamin D before winter rears its ugly head and chases us all back inside for another treacherous bout with the elements. Until then, I suggest you get thee out thee house. Find patios and rooftops on which to enjoy cold seasonal brews and fruity, frozen cocktails. Get to the water AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE! Hop off the train a couple stops early and enjoy the walk.

This time of year is to be treasured. I don’t want to hear “I’m too hot.” No! Stop it right there. Get in shape, wear less clothes, bathe in a lake. Make it work, people.

Summer pep talk aside, there are some great goings-on that I want to tell you about. Some are most certainly better than others, but I suggest you take it all in and form your own opinions. Do you like sports? Music? Drinking? Video games? I want to know! Tell me all your inner outings desires and I’ll work hard to curate the best damn list of urban adventures this side of Newtown Creek—look it up.

What’s that you ask?  Whassup? Here’s Whassup:

OMG Will Someone Please Foster This Ah-mazing Dog?

Meet Stella.

Stella is a 10-year-old, 40lb black rescue who’s lived her entire adult life on Park Slope’s own 11th Street.

"Oh, 11th Street, as in Bill de Blockio," you ask? Yes, that same street. Though even Bill will tell you, Stella’s the most famous resident of 11th Street.

That’s because Stella is the kindest, sweetest dog you’ll ever met. A lover of people, she’ll turn her belly up for a rub when you meet her almost immediately. She’s great with kids. Great with animals. A quiet, happy presence who’s hella low-maintainence. Stella's hiking days are far behind her, so while she loves being outside, she doesn’t require a long walk. And when she does go out, she’s an off-leash dog who would be just as happy to sit in your backyard or on your front stoop all day, watching the action go by.

Basically, she’s the dog that everybody dreams of having one day.

Like many, Stella’s filmmaker mom has been priced out of the neighborhood, and will now be living a bi-coastal life, commuting between LA and New York. (Apparently, she can't afford the $6,500 house that just became available on the block either). But Stella’s heart is in Brooklyn, and is not about to deal with that 405 traffic. So she’s looking for a foster home close-by where she can hang out between mom’s visits. Basically, Stella needs a long-term Airbnb.

First floor apartments are optimal, because Stella is a tripod and isn’t about to deal with your fourth floor walk-up. But you’re welcome to pick her up and carry her.

Are you Stella's foster parent? Send us an email at effedinparkslope at gmail dot com and let us know! Her future in Brooklyn is at your hands.

Now here are more photos of her for you to gawk at.

THAT FACE! THOSE EYES!

I MEAN CAN YOU EVEN HANDLE THE CUTENESS?!?
