2 Duck 2 Gooseious

In this go-go technological world, people don't have time for full words & phrases. Everything needs to be shortened or, as I like to say, abreived. Take 2 Duck Goose, a Cantonese restaurant that opened back around the beginning of August in the space on the corner of 4th Ave & 6th that was formerly occupied by Anthony's of 4th Ave Pizzeria.

They named the place after the beloved Duck Duck Goose children's game but this is 2014, so it's "2 Duck Goose" to you, missy.

The Science of the Supercollider

There was the time when the particle-accelerating Superconducting Super Collider didn't work out. It was 1993 & Congress & Clinton were scared of science & thus decided to stop the construction of a particle accelerator complex in Texas. 'Merica don't need no ding dang particle 'celrater figurin' out black holes & tramplin' on the Yellow Rose! Switzerland currently houses the current, updated version of the Super Collider.

There was the time when Radiohead released a song called "Supercollider" that was probably made with the SuperCollider programming language or some shit.

There was the time in 2013 when a new bar called "Supercollider" opened up on 4th Ave & 17th in Brooklyn, on an area of 4th Ave that's QUITE devoid of bars.

There was the time I went to Supercollider with friends & probably drank a few too many craft beers.

New Park Slope Eatery Cries Uncle

Uncles are the best. Personally, my dad's fraternal twin, Bob, is a Teamster who lacks a full set of teeth & lives in the Boston suburbs and occasionally drives the Farrelly brothers around when they're chillin' in New England & filming crappy movies. At one point, he worked at Logan Airport and I later inherited the jacket he wore on the runways. Bob's my uncle.

Until recently, Park Slope was hurting for uncle-named establishments. There's Uncle Barry's on 5th & the smattering of seasonal Uncle Louie G shops. Other than that, we're lacking in uncle love. When will we get a Park Slope outpost of Uncle Charlie's, NYC's #1 Gay Piano Bar? Only time will tell.

Just in the nick of time, like an uncle in the night, along comes Uncle Arthur's Café, which opened up back on April 1st in an unassuming space on 9th St just west of 4th Ave. It's the latest restaurant from Richard Gussoff, the chef who closed up his 7th Ave popup eatery, The Soup Bowl, for the season back in mid-March.

While you might assume that the establishment is named for the beloved Bewitched character, it's not. It's named for Gussoff's uncle, who was an attorney for Pacino back in the day & TOTALLY has to be the inspiration for Arthur Kirkland, the lawyer Pacino portrayed in the 1979 flick …And Justice for All.

Do You Have Ideas For 4th Avenue?

Photo via www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com

Minuette Le wants to spruce up 4th Avenue. How might we transform a few parking spaces into mini-gardens, the MFA Transdisciplinary Design student at Parsons asks. How might we transform the street into a living room for the weekend?

If 4th Avenue was transformed into my living room, it would be littered with a comically large amount of holiday-scented Yankee candles and Golden Girls DVDs, so let's hope the vision involves someone else's living room.

Minuette is offering a workshop THIS EVENING for those who'd like to contribute ideas as part of a project called the "Forth on 4th Avenue Pilot Project." Here are some more deets, via the group's Facebook page:

Marty Markowitz Still Has Big Plans For 4th Avenue

FiPS contributor J. Charles is on vacay this week, otherwise he'd be the one to bring you the latest news of Marty Markowitz and his grand plans for 4th Avenue (and by "bring you the news," I mean that he'd make fun of Marty before saying that there isn't actually any real hope for 4th avenue). JC, you are missed this week. OK, moving on:

Our borough prez's dreams of transforming 4th ave into something pretty and safe seem to be getting one step closer to a reality. Marty has formed an elite task force chaired by Chief of Staff Carlo Scissura, and has announced plans, some vague and some specific, for beautifying the strip. Here are the deets, via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle:
