REVIEW'D: TALDE

Oh my gawd.

It's 9am the following morning AFTER the amazing Friends-n-Family opening we were invited to last night at Talde, and I'm still full. But I'm not full in a "I feel like I'm gonna barf, let me erase the experience of this meal" sort of way...more in a "the last food I consumed was so mind blowingly delicious, how the fuck am I supposed to follow that up with an egg?" sort of way. It's like my stomach is *not* quite ready to move on.

In a word, Talde was resplendent. You should seriously go there immediately, and see for yourself.

[FiPS Was There...] Come for the Opener: O'Death

via odeath.net

We here at FIPS spend a hell of a lot of time out and about in Brooklyn, attending outdoor concerts, comedy shows and various other events. So [FIPS Was There...] is where we're gonna' talk about all this shit.

Around these parts, it's worth it to come for the opening act.

Last night I hit the Bell House for Brooklyn's best, by far, punked-out-backwoods-Appalachian-gothic folk band, O'Death. How many punked-out-backwoods-Appalachian folk bands are there in Brooklyn, you may ask? I only know the one for sure, but damn if they don't kick a little ass. Their set was as borderline insane and roiling as ever, despite the softer tone of their latest release, but I came away that night still thinking of the 8pm opener, Lady Lamb the Beekeeper.

[Review'd] Dekalb Market!

In New York City these days, food markets are a dime-a-dozen and it seems like there are new ones popping up all the time. In late May, we were introduced to the Smorgasburg Food Market up in Williamsburg. Two weeks back we got the first monthly Food Truck Rally at Grand Army Plaza.

This past weekend brought the opening of Dekalb Market, an outdoor market that's located directly outside of the Dekalb Ave subway stop.

Must See: Battle For Brooklyn

Photo: Tracy CollinsAfter eight years of filming over 500 hours of footage, filmmakers Suki Hawley and Michael Galinsky have chronicled the ultimate "If you see something, say something" in their rightfully raved about film, Battle For Brooklyn.

When the Atlantic Yards Project was announced back in 2003, there were mixed emotions about the proposed 16 skyscrapers and a large sports arena that many of us have now come to loathe. Sadly, our community was divided. While many strongly opposed the looming eviction of nearly 1,600 tenants whose property fell into the footprint of the design plan, some residents supported the project for the promise of jobs and the excitement of having a major sports team in our neighborhood.

[REVIEW'D] DUMPLINGS AND THINGS: I SECOND THAT!

So after reading the Brooklynian and Here's Park Slope reviews of newbie cheap eats Dumplings and Things, I decided to venture out into the rainy drizzle-that's-going-to-last-all-fucking-month-I-guess and head over to 5th ave for some dumpling-y goodness.

The place was fairly quiet, although it was 2:30 on a Monday afternoon and some people have REAL jobs and whatnot. The gentleman behind the counter was really nice and apologized for the missing drink machine that would have granted me the diet coke that I asked for. But it's only day two, so I can't really knock them for that. PLUS, for $2 you can spin your own cotton candy!
