The First Snow Of The Season Sticks, Takes Down Some Trees

[A giant tree down on 11th Street between 6th/7th Avenues: Photo via NineDaves' Twitter]

Welp, Mother Nature sure has been kicking our ass lately, eh? Yesterday Winter Storm Athena (side note: how do you guys feel about naming winter storms?) brought us snow, gusty winds and took down a few trees that Hurricane Sandy had already damaged:

Open Thread: Happy Labor Day, Kids!

Well FiPSTERS, Summer is almost over. But what a Summer it has been, right?! In the past few weeks alone we've survived an earthquake (shut it, West Coasters - it fucking counts), a hurricane and something really dis-gus-ting involving post-birth placenta.

In case you went on vacation sometime in the past three months to a place sans the Internet and missed out on some FiPS, here's a round-up of the juiciest stories from our most scorching season:

HURRICANE IRENE OPEN POST

Ok, ppl. So Hurricane Irene has blown her ass out of town, and I for one am pretty thrilled that I never had to make use of our "safe room." I am so serious, by the way.

Based on the armageddon like predictions of what was gonna go down, I actually cleared out our walk-in closet to use as a safe room in case the winds got too bad. All that advice about not being by any windows in your apt--Right, well there aren't any spots in our apt that aren't near a window.

SUNDAY OPEN POST: 'I MISS MAD MEN'

IMAGE VIA LOSTINBROOKLYN IN THE FIPS FLICKR POOL (JOIN US!)

Why hello.

It's Sunday, ya know. Which is the day I like to think about all the fucked up shit swirling around in my head (you eat eggs benedict at Applewood, I watch 3 back-to-back episodes of Big Brother...different strokes).

Anyway, here's what's on my mind:

  • The Glee Project - have you btchz seen this show? Cause it's completely amazing. It's a reality show in which the producers of Glee document the search for an actor to play in 7 eps of next year's season. These teenagers, who in real life were all probably total rejects at their respective schools, are all of the sudden stars on this show and it's kind of amazing slash heart warming to watch. So all the sudden, the very things that people made fun of them for in the caf every day at school are the things that make them so damn special on this show. Awwww, right!? WATCH IT (it's on 9pm every Sunday on Oxygen).
  • Bare Burger - went there on Friday and the place was jammin. I thought the food was very good, though the service left a bit to be desired. I'm giving them a pass since it was day two, but our waitress was very confused by the little hand-held computer-y thing she had to use and I mean VERY. Then, despite the fact that our table ordered 5 burgers, 1 came out and 4 of us sat there staring at each other for 15 mins until the rest of the food came out. On the plus side, everyone was super nice and they have a half onion rings/half french fries option which totally fucking makes my day (WHY DO MORE RESTAURANTS NOT DO THIS? WHYYYYY??). I will def be back.
  • Thick cut cold cuts - ok, so I have this thing where I LITERALLY want to gag if the person at the supermarket or deli or whatever where I get my turkey cuts it too thickly. Like I can't even eat it. My instructions are usually like this "cut it tissue paper thin, please!" and yet sometimes they just don't listen. And if I get home and I'm confronted with these gross, thick-cut slices of turkey I will take the whole thing and just chuck it in the garbage. Like I cannot eat it like that...my brain won't allow it. What is wrong with me?
  • I miss Mad Men this summer.

Ok, your turn. WTF is on your minds, Park Slope?

Open Thread: Happy Independence Day, FIPSTERS!

Photo via sweetleafteablog.com

When I think of Independence day, I think "explosions." When I think explosions I think of Meg Ryan at Katz's deli and, perhaps more appropriately on the day of a massive firework display, MICHAEL FUCKING BAY.

Here's a sweet vid from College Humor that sums up every MB action flick in under a minute. Enjoy all 60 seconds of sweaty male protagonists, clumsy exposition and sweet fiery eruptions.

Anyone got a saucy tale to share about the long holiday weekend?
