Tis the Season for a Great Toddy Recipe

9 months out of the year I'm a gin & tonic kind of girl. It's a light and refreshing drink that never weighs heavy in my stomach like beer tends to do. But during the winter months, all I crave are spiked ciders and hot toddies that can warm my chilly ass in the first sip or two. Recently, I stumbled upon this recipe that combines the two in a hot apple-ginger toddy -- a great, warm cocktail perfect for winter dinner parties and supper clubs. If you want to give it a whirl, here's the recipe!

No Bottle Service for the Barclays Center

Serious nightclubbers recently endured a major blow to their future party plans when it was announced that bottle service will not be allowed at the borough's most controversial giant wicker basket building, the Barclays Center. This is bad news for anyone who aspires to live like P. Diddy or needs an entire bottle of Grey Goose during a basketball game, but somewhat positive news for concerned citizens of Park Slope.

There’s already been a ton of contention about the liquor license at Barclays Center. “DRUNKEN SPORTS FANS ARE GOING TO BE PISSING AND VOMITING ALL OVER OUR STREETS!” Slope residents cried in our comments section. “IT’S SUCH AN EYESORE!” screamed others. “Eh, at least we didn’t end up with that Frank Gehry monstrosity,” shrugged a third group, who feel at peace with their early realization that resistance was futile. As we’ve learned over the past few years, there is no decision for the Atlantic Yards site that wouldn’t be met with outrage from one group or another.

Frothy Brown Santorum Now Being Served in Glasses at Pacific Standard

Photo by Bryan Bruchman / The Brooklyn Paper

If you've been on The Google Machine lately, you might be aware that lots of people are talking about Santorum surging from behind in places like Ohio and Tennessee. But now, you can get a frothy glass full of Santorum at Brooklyn's own Pacific Standard, too.

Confused?  We're here to help!

Santorum has, heretofore, had two meanings:

1. The frothy mixture of lube and fecal matter that is sometimes the by-product of anal sex; and

2. Republican Presidential candidate and former US Senator from Pennsylvania, Rick Santorum.

Now, however, there's a third meaning, because Pacific Standard has whipped up a frothy brown cocktail that's meant to evoke (at least visually) the thick, dark, fetid, sludgy concoction of Astroglide and shit.

We've all come full circle, really.  Think about it this way:

Keep Your Tail Taught With Smarter Cocktailing

 Via http://openwalls.com/

When trying to maintain the current body or shed some pounds, it’s probably best to avoid alcohol altogether. But for us boozers, that isn’t going to happen. So if you’re going to imbibe, there are ways to lessen the calories and sugar you’ll be pouring down your throat.

A typical Margarita, while fun and beachy-feeling, contains upwards of 750 calories. If you drink 3 of these, it’s akin to eating 3 Big Macs and a chocolate shakes. Forbes says the most fattening cocktail is the Long Island Ice Tea, coming in at 780 calories and 44 grams of carbs. To burn that off by walking (100 calories per mile is typical), you’d need to hike from Grand Army Plaza to JFK. Drink 2 and you’d need to walk from the Coop to the Bronx Zoo.

PARK SLOPE TOP TEN: PLACES TO GET HAMMERED AT BRUNCH

Drink options at Fonda.Last Saturday, I rolled out of bed well after noon and treated my bedheaded self to brunch. As a former early riser, it took a while for me to appreciate brunch for its true beauty. At its best, brunch is an unapologetic continuation of the previous night's drinking. There is no better breeding ground for such indulgence than the many brunch hotspots in the Slope. After MUCH research, here is a list of the ten places you should hit up for a drink on a Saturday morning....or afternoon.

#10 - BOGOTA: A Colombian by blood, I must put Bogota on this list. Along with Bloody Marias ($5) and a variety of Mimosas ($5), the brightly colored restaurant serves Refajo ($5), a mixed drink of Colombian beer and soda. It's delightfully light, yet not fruity. Bogota used to include an alcoholic drink with each brunch entree, but has since revised their menu to an earlier happy hour (starts at 11 am) at a cheaper price. Luckily, the quality and quantity hasn't changed.
