What's Worse: Putting a 7 year-old on a diet or writing about it?

Via Vogue

NYC mom Dara-Lynn Weiss had issues with her daughter Bea’s weight. She put the 7 year-old on a diet, then wrote about it for Vogue. The article included awkward mother-daughter photos, like the one you see above. Here's a snippet from the interview:

Sometimes Bea's after-school snack was a slice of pizza or a gyro from the snack vendor. Other days I forced her to choose a low fat vegetable soup or a single hard-boiled egg. Occasionally I'd give in to her pleas for a square of coffee cake, mainly because I wanted to eat half of it. When she was given access to cupcakes at a party, I alternated between saying, "Let's not eat that, it's not good for you"; "Okay, fine, go ahead, but just one"; "and "Bea, you have to stop eating crap like that, you're getting too heavy," depending on my mood. Then I'd secretly eat two when she wasn't looking.

Where to Shop in Park Slope For a High Protein/Low Carb Diet

Olive Bar at Key Foods on 5th Avenue

About a month ago, I decided to lose some weight and shape up, in part by drastically changing my diet because the incremental tweaking wasn’t working. And no, I was not going the Hollywood route with a no-food starvation or cocaine type of diet. Nor was I going to drink liquid kelp for 6 months.  I chose to eliminate as much sugars and carbs as possible, which is fucking a mighty pain if you’re like me and:

  1. Eat things like cereal, pancakes, waffles, McMuffins, leftover pizza and bagels for breakfast.
  2. Enjoy anything encased in buns, wraps, tortillas, puff pastry or on/under/within pasta.
  3. Love side dishes like mashed potatoes, fries, rice, noodles, tater chips, tortilla chips, or anything breaded, battered and crusted.

In other words, stuff that tastes good.

Keep Your Tail Taught With Smarter Cocktailing

 Via http://openwalls.com/

When trying to maintain the current body or shed some pounds, it’s probably best to avoid alcohol altogether. But for us boozers, that isn’t going to happen. So if you’re going to imbibe, there are ways to lessen the calories and sugar you’ll be pouring down your throat.

A typical Margarita, while fun and beachy-feeling, contains upwards of 750 calories. If you drink 3 of these, it’s akin to eating 3 Big Macs and a chocolate shakes. Forbes says the most fattening cocktail is the Long Island Ice Tea, coming in at 780 calories and 44 grams of carbs. To burn that off by walking (100 calories per mile is typical), you’d need to hike from Grand Army Plaza to JFK. Drink 2 and you’d need to walk from the Coop to the Bronx Zoo.
