FIPS Cares: Save a Dog, Cat, Chinchilla or a Mouse with Two Clicks of The Latter

Here are some of the animals up for adoption!

A nice FIPS reader named Jenna recently let us know that Sean Casey Animal Rescue, a nearby no-kill animal shelter, is a finalist for a funding grant from Chase Bank. They're looking to the community for votes to help win said funding grant, and the deadline is MIDNIGHT TONIGHT, so let's get on it!

Here's the rescue center's mission statement:

The purpose of this endeavor is to aid unfortunate animals in the interest of a higher quality of life. We take in rescued, confiscated, neglected, injured, ill, unmanageable, or otherwise unwanted animals from private owners, zoos, shelters, and other public organizations. These animals are cared for, and/or rehabilitated to the best of our ability and means until which time they can be found healthy, happy homes - whether it be through adoption to qualified candidates or legally released into habitats suitable to the specific species in conjunction with licensed wildlife rehabilitators.

You can help save animals without having to donate or adopt or even show up to the rescue center… just click to vote for this local business, and encourage your friends to do the same. If you're on Facebook, you can vote here. If you are a Chase Customer, you can also vote here.

FIPS CARES: Let's Find These 2 Sister Cats a Home!

A Park Slope couple moving out of the country is looking for a new home for their two young cats. If you're looking to adopt a few felines to make your apartment cheerful and free of mice, please reach out to them via this craigslist ad.

And before some of you get all, "These-people-sound-like-selfish-dicks-who-adopted-the-cats-and-now-won't-take-responsibility-for-them," know that this doesn't sound like an easy decision for this couple. Surely moving cats out of the country isn't an incredibly simple feat.

Here's their post:

10 things you probably don't need to know about Australian Wildlife before going to the Prospect Park Zoo

G'Day, Mate! Did you know that Prospect Park Zoo has given their "Discovery Trail" an Australian theme? Well, they have, which means if you decide to visit, know that you'll be able to walk around with emus, dingos, wallabies and a kangaroo.  And if you've got a horrid little child to ditch, you're in luck!  There are now animals in the neighborhood that will gladly eat your baby!

I happen to be something of an expert on all things Australian, having vacationed there, once.  Also, I used to love the kangaroo salad at Long Tan, before it shuttered.  So, before you go to the Prospect Park Zoo to feed your baby to a dingo, here are ten things about Australia that might be fun conversation-starters with other strangers on the Discovery Trail.

Vexed in Park Slope: When Animals Attack! Edition

NYPL Image Archive

Remember the Bronx Zoo cobra escape of early 2011? Of course you do. That story got more local news air time than 37% of all the murders in 2011 combined. Ok, I totally made that up. But I'm sure it's not far from truth. Let's face it, New Yorkers are more afraid of nature than we are of the myriad of frightening things that are just part and parcel of Big City living. So it should be no surprise that denizens of Park Slope have long been terrorized by critters run amok. For example, in November of 1921 a . . .

17! People! Bit! The Times reports that an otherwise quiet Sunday night in Park Slope was interrupted by a crazed dog who ran through Flatbush, Park Slope and Bath Beach (that's a lot of running!) biting people all along the route. The fates of those bitten by the rabid mutt are lost to history, but the dog's is known: he was taken down by a single bullet at the intersection of Smith and Carroll Streets late that night. I guess he was all bitten out by the time he made his way into Carroll Gardens.

Thirty years later, the good people of our neighborhood found themselves once again cowering at the furry of a tireless beast:

Rescuing Dogs, a Block Party and All around Badassery? We're IN!

Image Via Chinae Alexander

We love to see folks in the 'hood doing great things, especially when it comes to four-legged friends.

Let me tell you a little about Sara.

Sara started an independent dog rescue called Badass Brooklyn Foster Dog about 6 months ago, AND is a documentary filmmaker who lives right here in the Slope. The pups she rescues are mostly from high-kill, rural shelters in South Carolina, North Carolina, and Kentucky, and she's doing most of the leg work herself (unpaid), along with a group of other documentary filmmakers from around Brooklyn who have recently joined her. Sara typically houses 2-4 dogs in her 1 bedroom apartment in addition to her own beagle, so she needs some help. Here's how we can do our part...
