Yet Another FIPS Food ROUNDUP!

Maybe you've been a bit busy over the past week. Maybe you haven't been able to keep up with all of the hood's recent food news. It makes sense after all, as there's been a hell of a lot going on in the world, what with the downfall of Carlos Danger and the whole Syria thing and the still-lingering effects of Miley Cyrus being OH SO BAD. Fret not, lemmings! This here Park Slopish food news roundup is designed to fill all the tasty, tasty holes in your heart.

On Tuesday, Park Slopers awoke to the news that Zito's, the Italian sandwich shop that at one point appeared to be part of a resurgence along 7th Ave, was closing. The owners took to Twitter to announce that they'd lost their lease on their original 7th Ave location, leaving only their 5th Ave shop open. Fortunately, Zito's signed a ten-year lease on the 5th Ave space & have plans to expand their delivery area so, for now, folks will still be able to get their fix of Autogrills...all without having to travel to stupid 7th Ave!

Parkwanus-Sized Drama at The Pines?

Photo via The Pines Facebook page

LONG LIVE PARKWANUS! A mere twenty days ago, The Pines, Parkwanus’ rustically kooky Italian-Asianish restaurant became the neighborhood's first restaurant to receive a starred review from The NY Times' Pete Wells. While they did only receive one star, Wells noted that they seemed to be improving over time, comparing them to the 70's band Television...who apparently sucked for a bunch before they became awesome.

Then this past Friday, word got out that The Pines' head chef Angelo Romano was leaving the restaurant on Friday the 13th. BUT WHA??? Leaving so soon after a NY Times review? It's not like it was that bad of a review. I mean, it paled in comparison to when The Times' Sam Sifton dropped a zero-star "fair" rating on Eddie Huang's Xiao Ye, which closed a month-and-a-half later after one too many Four Loko-related raids.

So WHAT COULD IT BE?

[What You Should Order At...] Korzo

WHAT YOU SHOULD ORDER AT... is a recurring column designed in kind for your opinionated asses and our lazy asses. When the mood strikes, we pick one Park Slope resto and recommend our favorite dish. Are we right? Are we wrong? YOU KNOW YOU WANNA WEIGH IN.

It's a scientific fact that everything on the planet is WAY better when it's been deep fried. N.A.S.A. SCIENTIST TRUTH. I'm fairly certain that I once saw something on the History Channel about it. JK. The only thing I've ever viewed on the History Channel was something about aliens & Jebus. HISTORY. Also a bunch of Nazi stuff.

But seriously though, after the discovery of fire back during early Geico-pitchman days, deep frying is the best cooking technique that ever happened to humans. FUCK SOUS VIDE.

Way back in early 2010, we positively gushed over the art of deep-fried Robicelli's cupcakes. Right here on Park Slope's 5th Ave, Chip Shop deep fries the shit out of stuff for a living. One of my fave things to nosh on at the annual 5th Ave Street Fair is deep-fried Oreos. Has Fonzy perhaps long since leapt over that proverbial culinary shark tank as far as deep frying goes? Probably, but fuck if I care. I say bring it on.

At Korzo, on 5th Ave way down in what is pretty much the South Slope these days, their whole thing is deep-fried burgers.

[FIPS Was There...] How to BBQ at Brooklyn Brewery

'Tis the SUMMA, people. Get down with your bad selves. 'Tis the time of beaches & vacations & backyard BBQs. Personally, I don't even own a grill but I do actually have a backyard & should probably own a grill sooner than later. In the meantime, it’s the SUMMA & when this time of year comes around, I make sure to take in as many BBQs as humanly possible. Eventually, some time in 2014, when I do get that grill, I'm going to need to be on top of my game so I can host my own BBQs. I mean, I'm not entirely off my game around a grill but my duties have always been in more of a "sous chef" vein, as it's never been my grill.

One night a few weeks back, I came across an event listing for a "How to BBQ" class at Brooklyn Brewery as part of their regular schedule of events. The hosts: Heartbreaking Dawns (a local sauce company), Delaney Barbecue (of Brisket Town fame) & Q Drinks (a soda company with their roots in Ft. Greene). Samples included. The price: $5. You can't even get a good BJ for that price these days! As such, I picked up a ticket quicklike.

[What You Should Order At...] Sea Witch

WHAT YOU SHOULD ORDER AT... is a recurring column designed in kind for your opinionated asses and our lazy asses. When the mood strikes, we pick one Park Slop(ish) resto and recommend our favorite dish. Are we right? Are we wrong? YOU KNOW YOU WANNA WEIGH IN.

When I last wrote about Sea Witch just after its opening way back in early 2012, I had no idea that it'd eventually become the Brooklyn bar that I'd end up most frequenting. I mean, at the time of that first visit, the indoor fish tank & beer selection & food & tunes were relatively cool but the backyard was non-existent & shit, there are a MILLION bars in Brooklyn. Still, the backyard eventually opened & I have friends who live just around the corner & Sea Witch still has their menu of exceptionally-well-done bar food, so I kept finding my way back. Also: OTHER THAN ME, LOW DOUCHEBAG QUOTIENT.

That menu: I've more than dabbled in the burger. I've tried the clam sandwich & the oysters & the kielbasa sandwich, each on multiple occasions. They've even added tacos, but I've yet to go down that path. Still, the one dish on their menu that stands out is their Pork Schnitzel Sandwich ($7).
