Yet Another FIPS Food ROUNDUP!
Maybe you've been a bit busy over the past week. Maybe you haven't been able to keep up with all of the hood's recent food news. It makes sense after all, as there's been a hell of a lot going on in the world, what with the downfall of Carlos Danger and the whole Syria thing and the still-lingering effects of Miley Cyrus being OH SO BAD. Fret not, lemmings! This here Park Slopish food news roundup is designed to fill all the tasty, tasty holes in your heart.
On Tuesday, Park Slopers awoke to the news that Zito's, the Italian sandwich shop that at one point appeared to be part of a resurgence along 7th Ave, was closing. The owners took to Twitter to announce that they'd lost their lease on their original 7th Ave location, leaving only their 5th Ave shop open. Fortunately, Zito's signed a ten-year lease on the 5th Ave space & have plans to expand their delivery area so, for now, folks will still be able to get their fix of Autogrills...all without having to travel to stupid 7th Ave!
The past week wasn't all full of closing sadness though, as Park Slope learned that it'll finally be getting that overpriced lobster it's been waiting so long for. 2013 Vendy Award finalist Luke's Lobster announced that they'll be moving into the hood in the coming months...er...year. As Here's Park Slope reported, the folks behind Luke's Lobster are planning on setting up shop in Park Slope as soon as 2014. Hold on one sec while I set my alarm...ok, done. While nothing's been confirmed yet, the rumor is that they're eyeing the storefront on 5th Ave that was last occupied by Joe's Shoe Repair.
While Luke's opening is an item for the way way future, next Monday, Danny Amend, who spent time at Per Se & seven years at Franny's, will be opening a southern Italian restaurant called Marco's in the space that housed Franny's up until the Park Slope favorite moved up Flatbush Ave back in April. Grub Street noted that the menu will definitely deviate from Franny's as Amend has removed the pizza oven from the space. People seem to go nuts for Franny's so we assume people will flock to Marco's whether or not the menu is reminiscent of Franny's.
And finally, though a ton of BBQ options have opened up in the area around Union St, there's nothing to be had in the area around the North Slope. That all changed about a week or so back when John Avila, a former pitmaster at Austin’s Franklin Barbecue, opened up Morgan's Barbecue in a former industrial space over on the corner of St Mark's & Flatbush. When it comes to BBQ, Franklin's has gained a reputation as one of the country's top purveyors of brisket, so we're assuming hoping that, with its Franklin's pedigree, Morgan's will be a strong addition to Brooklyn's constantly-expanding BBQ scene.
Also, in case you haven't heard, Jackie's Fifth is still open. Calexico still isn't.
