FiPS Preview: Threes Brewing

Photo via Threes Brewing's Instagram

Brooklyn can never have enough breweries. There’s Sixpoint down in Red Hook, Other Half over in Carroll Gardens & KelSo in Clinton Hill. There’s even some "Brooklyn Brewery" up in Williamsburg. In the near future, Parkwanus is getting a brewery of its own. I told you Parkwanus was BLOWING UP!

I don't know if you know this but THREE is the magic number. Oh yes it is. No more. No less. THAT'S the magic number. Just think of all the cool things associated with the number three…stooges, strikes, wishes. Parkwanus will soon be home to a three-themed brewery--Threes Brewing--which is opening up a huge ass fifteen-barrel brewery & event space at 333 Douglass St. I got a brief tour of & a feel for the place last night.

Threes Brewing's the vision of three dudes--Andrew (a playwright/lawyer), Josh (a former tech dude) & Justin (Ditmas Park’s Sycamore Bar/Flower Shop). They've brought in some dude named Greg (formerly of Greenport Harbor Brewing) to be their brewmaster. From inception, opening the brewery has been about a four year journey for the trio. After a lengthy process securing the location, they've turned an eight-month build into a pretty impressive 5,000-square-foot space with room for 300-or-so people.

Park Slope Craigslist Blotter

FOR SALE: Bricks

This Park Slope couple wanted to redo their garden in a vintage style. Needed some bricks. Ordered some bricks. Overdid it a bit though. Now they’re stuck with 400 leftover bricks. Maybe bricks are like garlic knots. You only want one or two. But you have to order six. Or a dozen. So you order bricks by the thousand. What would you do with a thousand garlic knots? Eat them. They’re small. Don’t be a baby.

FOR SALE: Typewriter

People collect typewriters. Cool people. Tom Hanks collects typewriters and I saw him in that movie. You know him, he was Larry Crowne! This typewriter is from 1909 and it works. It looks really cool. If you have $425 laying around that you were just going to burn anyway then you should really buy this instead. In fact if you buy it contact us at FIPS and I’ll type up the next Craigslist Blotter on it. We’ll post it as a screen shot or something. It’ll look vintage. Those brick people will jizz themselves over it.

Principal of School for Gifted and Talented Opens Mouth Inserts Su Pie

As we told you in late September, parents of 5th graders are in the throes of the highly competitive, stress-inducing, public middle school application process, spending October and November going to all those tours and open houses for which they fought hard to get spots. On Tuesday, there was a doozy of an open house at Brooklyn School of Inquiry, a highly selective school for the gifted and talented, which only last week DNAinfo reported was the most difficult school to get into, accepting only 2% of the kids who applied for sixth grade last year. Nearly 200 parents and their 10 year olds showed up to hear about the Bensonhurst school, many from Park Slope’s PS321, PS39 and PS10, for what may only amount to 12 open spots, at most, next fall.

Welp! They got way more than they bargained for when Principal Donna Taylor responded to a question about foreign language instruction at BSI by saying, "In New York City, if you don’t speak Spanish, you’re going to clean your own house." She also said that BSI is "the whitest citywide school," without suggesting that this was a problem, or that she had interest in increasing the school's diversity. Needless to say, people were PISSED.

Does Park Slope Got Talent?

Howie Mandel once had little fly larvae grow UNDER HIS SKIN. As a child, some crazy-ass mutant alien fly impregnated him with babies and they actually grew, requiring a doctor to freeze (some) of them to death. His Mom scraped the rest out over a few more weeks. My Mom would have been saying the rosary and bathing me in Holy Water (El Diablo!).  So it is no surprise he is a germaphobe.  Why he thinks America has any talent (except for getting fat, then getting diabetes, and keeping the Kardashians employed) I have no idea. But he and the AGT (That’s America’s Got Talent, for you non-hollywood types) are returning to NYC next week to try their best to find those of you that don’t suck at anything.

[SPONSORED] What are all those blue and white cars you keep seeing in Brooklyn?

car2go-brooklyn-coney-island

Sponsored By car2go.

car2go will get you to where you need to be: just take it, drive it, park it. It's fun, saves money and helps the environment.

Created By BlankSlate

They’re hard to miss — these blue-and-white cars you’re starting to see all over the borough, each roughly the size of one of Shaq’s shoes. So what’s the deal? Are we being invaded by stylish leprechauns? Whose cars are these? And how can you get your hands on one?

Rest easy — there is no threat of a leprechaun invasion (that we know of). The cars belong to car2go, the point-to-point car-sharing service that has revolutionized the way city dwellers get around, from Miami to Milan… and now in Brooklyn! It’s a brilliant concept: when you need a car, you just find one nearby, get in, and drive to where you want to go. When you’re done, you just park it in a legal parking space, and you’re done. You pay only for the minutes you drive it.

All you have to do to get started is to sign up. For a limited time, registration is free, plus you get 30 free minutes of driving time (just use the promo code “BKLYN”). That’s 30 free minutes of drive time you can use to run an errand, commute, or get to those areas of Brooklyn that are off the beaten path. Check out car2go’s website for FAQs on signing up, driving, and parking.
