FiPS Preview: Threes Brewing

Brooklyn can never have enough breweries. There’s Sixpoint down in Red Hook, Other Half over in Carroll Gardens & KelSo in Clinton Hill. There’s even some "Brooklyn Brewery" up in Williamsburg. In the near future, Parkwanus is getting a brewery of its own. I told you Parkwanus was BLOWING UP!

I don't know if you know this but THREE is the magic number. Oh yes it is. No more. No less. THAT'S the magic number. Just think of all the cool things associated with the number three…stooges, strikes, wishes. Parkwanus will soon be home to a three-themed brewery--Threes Brewing--which is opening up a huge ass fifteen-barrel brewery & event space at 333 Douglass St. I got a brief tour of & a feel for the place last night.

Threes Brewing's the vision of three dudes--Andrew (a playwright/lawyer), Josh (a former tech dude) & Justin (Ditmas Park’s Sycamore Bar/Flower Shop). They've brought in some dude named Greg (formerly of Greenport Harbor Brewing) to be their brewmaster. From inception, opening the brewery has been about a four year journey for the trio. After a lengthy process securing the location, they've turned an eight-month build into a pretty impressive 5,000-square-foot space with room for 300-or-so people.

When you walk in the front door, you instantly notice the vastness of the space. While it hasn't been installed yet, there'll be a bunch of greenery near the front entrance. On a second level near the front door, they'll have a growler station that, in the morning, will be serving coffee from Ninth Street Espresso. After a few booths in the front room, the main area features more booths & a long bar with custom made sliding library-style shelves behind it, allowing them to clean the tanks, which are located directly behind the bar.

Upstairs past the growler station, there's a 60-seat event space that'll host private parties, live music & the like. Outside, there's a 3,000-square-foot backyard that isn't even close to being finished at the moment. When it is, it'll feature another bar, shitloads of seating & an area with a nineteen-foot high trellis that'll have hops growing off it, allowing them to pump out wet-hop brews.

Like most breweries, they're starting off by concentrating on brewing two main beers--a saison & their Single Tree IPA. I sampled the saison & while it's good, I've never been big on saisons, so I'll likely stick to the IPA for now. Regardless, they're brewing their beers right there, so they'll be fresh & made with love. If for some dumbass reason you don't like beer, they'll try to peak your interest with barrel-aged cocktails.

As for food, they're still working on the exact menu & will be starting off slow with food before expanding. As Justin explained, they're a bar with food & not the other way around. The kitchen, while not exposed, is right off the front room & as is typically the style in beer halls, you'll be able to order it from kitchen window & they'll bring the food to you.

They're hoping to soft open around the beginning of December but you can get a sneak preview before then, as BrisketTown is doing a noon to midnight popup at the brewery this Saturday. While BrisketTown's food is reason enough to stop by, it'll also be the first opportunity to get a taste of Threes Brewing's beers. As part of the event, they'll be filling 250 growlers of their IPA & if you want to guarantee that you get one, you can pre-order here for only $11.34. That's way cheaper than pretty much every growler at Bierkraft.

I, for one, can't wait.
