Whassup: Shake-it-to-Me Edition

via stuffucanuse.co

MOTHERFUCKING EARTHQUAKE!! Now that I've caught your attention (and made the requisite reference to recent events) let's get to the fun stuff: Enjoyable enjoyables to heal your psyche, so recently damaged (well, mildly irritated) by the reminder that our landmasses float upon angry, grumbling dinner plates. It's Whassup: Shake-it-to-Me Edition:

* Thursday, Aug. 26:
Civil War Rock, Rock Shop: Every so often, the mid-sized elves here at FIPS who write Whassup like to recommend a random band based on their interesting description. At the very least, you know they picked the right friend to write free PR shit for them. This time out: "Miracles of Modern Science," which seems to be a mutant hybrid of 1850s instrumentation and 1980s pop sensibilities. The Brooklyn music scene is so dripping with talent, it might just rock you how exactly how you wanted. 8pm Doors, $10.

Slope Science Fest Turns Five

via cakecentral.com

Lured by the promise of sweet, sweet knowledge, the nerds of Park Slope (and beyond!) lope monthly to darkened caverns watched over by the glassy eyes of stuffed, scientific specimens: Behold! The geeky rites of a clandestine brother/sisterhood: It's called the Secret Science Club -- and it's turning five.

A Union Hall and Bell House institution since 2006, the monthly, booze-infused -- and FREE -- science lecture series is celebrating its birthday with a Kickstarter campaign. You can hear about the Kickstarter push in person, or drop a fiver (or, you know, a quarter-dollar-er, if you've invested heavily in stocks lately) into SSC's new tip jar at their next show, which is TODAY, Aug. 24: Rob Martienssen from Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory will talk about doofing around (not a technical term) with plant genes to make biofuels, super corn, and talking vegetable companions (MAYBE?). It's 8pm at the Bell House (FREE as usual).

The Skint Is Calling For Talent Show Submissions!

FiPS favorite go-to for bargains, cheap eats and free events, THE SKINT is hosting a talent competition at The Bell House!

They're currently taking submissions, so if you've got a weird or wonderful talent it's time to bust out that Flip Cam and record your shit for them. I was thinking of entering the contest since I can write backwards and upside down fluently, but I'm not sure the aftermath of childhood dyslexia is a talent so much as a sad reminder of my family having to read my handwritten birthday cards with a hand mirror.

The Skint is accepting submissions through Friday, 8/26 at midnight. The show is going down on Thursday, 9/8 and there will be cash prizes and local celebrity judges to tell you whether or not you suck.
