Whassup: Shake-it-to-Me Edition
MOTHERFUCKING EARTHQUAKE!! Now that I've caught your attention (and made the requisite reference to recent events) let's get to the fun stuff: Enjoyable enjoyables to heal your psyche, so recently damaged (well, mildly irritated) by the reminder that our landmasses float upon angry, grumbling dinner plates. It's Whassup: Shake-it-to-Me Edition:
* Thursday, Aug. 26: Civil War Rock, Rock Shop: Every so often, the mid-sized elves here at FIPS who write Whassup like to recommend a random band based on their interesting description. At the very least, you know they picked the right friend to write free PR shit for them. This time out: "Miracles of Modern Science," which seems to be a mutant hybrid of 1850s instrumentation and 1980s pop sensibilities. The Brooklyn music scene is so dripping with talent, it might just rock you how exactly how you wanted. 8pm Doors, $10.
* Saturday, Aug. 27 - Sunday, Aug. 28: Afro-Punk, Fort Greene: The season for summer music festivals has not yet ended. Fort Greene keeps the outdoor party going with a killer lineup at Afro-Punk this year: Gym Class Heroes and Das Racist rock Saturday, followed by Janelle Monae and Mr. Fuck You himself, Cee Lo Green on the Lord's Day. The festival welcomes NY's burgeoning food-truck scene to fill festival bellies and gets all mid-90's alternative with skate and BMX competitions. FREE entry, first performances at 11am both days.
* Saturday, Aug. 27: MJ's B-Day, Prospect Park: Three years ago, sequined gloves across the globe wiped snotty noses as tears fell upon sadly moonwalking toes. Yep, we lost MJ -- and Spike Lee invited all of Brooklyn to celebrate how much we loved Billie Jean with a summer party in the park. It's year three, and we still haven't gotten enough (hence: not stopping). Last year 50,000 black and/or white (FOR THE LAST TIME, IT DOESN'T MATTER) celebrants converged on the Nethermead Field of Prospect Park to honor the timeless music of Tito Jackson's brother. How many this year? Come see. 12-6pm, FREE.
* Saturday, Aug. 27: School of Girl Rock, Music Hall of Williamsburg:Ok, Billiamsburg, sometimes you redeem your tight-jeaned, Park-Slope-hating self. This is pretty adorable: the Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls showcases the rock-out skills of its little shredders. Come, encourage these girls to rip power cords instead of screaming like idiots for Justin Bieber. Do it for the children. 12pm, $10.
* Monday, Aug. 29: PostSecret Celebration, Bell House: That purveyor of fascinating tidbits about strangers' favorite hidden piercings and juiciest sexual perversions, PostSecret, celebrates its legions of fans -- who will, presumably, be extremely tight-lipped in person. Founder Frank Warren speaks as his site thanks those who crowdsourced the PostSecret mobile app. 7pm, FREE.
