Whassup: Fun in the Dark Edition

Going to 11 (via wallpapergravity.com)

Now that it's getting dark at 5:00, I'm pretty sure that means you can start drinking at 4:00. And the descent of early evenings doesn't have to mean you stay at home crying in the darkness EVERY night. Come on out for some post-daylight saving's fun. It's Whassup: Fun in the Dark Edition:

* Friday, Nov. 11: None More Eleven, Rock Shop: Well, this is pretty brilliant. The Rock Shop celebrates 11/11/11 with a tribute to Spinal Tap. If you don't know why that's appropriate, then you probably wouldn't be interested, so I won't explain. Come check out a heap of musicians covering "Big Bottom" and other choice bits from the catalogue of one of England's loudest bands. 8pm, $10.

Lights Camera Auction!

Interested in bidding on a vintage typewriter, old-fashioned rotary phone or a stuffed hen that once graced the set of a TV show or movie? KRRB, a site where you can buy and sell with your neighbors, is pairing up with local business Film Biz Recycling to bring the Slope an epic night of $1 tacos from Oaxaca, Brooklyn Brewery beer and live music. But the main event is the auction, where you can "bid on rescued props, wardrobe, and furnishings hot off the sets of NYC productions and destined for the landfill." The event is going down on Thursday, 11/3 at 7PM at the Film Biz Prop Shop and costs $10. [FIPS WAS THERE...] 'LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS' AT THE GALLERY PLAYERS

We here at FIPS spend a hell of a lot of time out and about in Brooklyn, attending outdoor concerts, comedy shows and various other events. So [FIPS Was There...] is where we're gonna' talk about all this shit.

When it comes to cult classic Halloween movie-musicals, The Rocky Horror Picture Show pretty much has the market cornered. But as much as I enjoy Tim Curry playing a sweet transvestite, I’ve always had a thing for the 1986 flop Little Shop of Horrors. The film, based on the 1982 off-Broadway musical by composer Alan Menken and writer Howard Ashman (which itself was a based on the 1960 dark comedy starring a young Jack Nicholson), has always hooked me. I don’t know if it’s Rick Moranis’s doughy performance, or Ellen Greene’s gloriously odd vocals or even Steve Martin’s creepy ridiculousness that brings me back time and time again. But for some reason, that kooky gang and their people-eating plant just makes me happy.

Gothamist Gives Us The Scoop On NYC's Haunted Houses

The Blackout Haunted House / Photo via Gothamist

Our friends at Gothamist recently posted a review of the top 5 "scariest" haunted houses in NYC. Overall, it sounds like our big city is lacking serious scare tactics. The Blackhout Haunted House was described as "someone's rape fantasy, has overt sexual connotations, and scares the living daylights out of you. Couldn't get through it. Just gross." And Madame Tassauds haunted house of... wax figures? Meh. I'd rather spend my money on Sleep No More
