Whassup: No Office Party Edition

It's the season of the office holiday party, which means it's time to warm up your ass cheeks in preparation for the copy machine/your boss' drunken hands, load up on eggnog, and change who can see facebook photos that get posted of you. But hark! There are other, somewhat less uncomfortable things to do this week! Welcome to Whassup: No Office Party Edition:

* Thursday, Dec. 8 and Thursday, Dec 15:
Snowflake Celebration, 7th Ave: Let's be honest -- the holidays are really about discounts. With Black Friday just a pepper-sprayed memory, you've still got some sales a-comin'. Seventh Ave shops will have a range of discounts, along with a "No sales tax X-mas" promotion during this festival. Also, carols and Christmas treats and other nonsense. Doors open until 9 or 10pm.

It's at UNION HALL from 7-9pm and we'll all be gathering on the back platform area (behind the bocce court). There will be FREE drinks until we blow through Google's budget, so get there early and party with us.

Whassup: So This is December Edition

by 440 Gallery artist Ella Yang

This is it, folks: December. Brace yourselves for imminent slushy shitstorms and 25 days of inescapable Christmas tunes. The good part is, you have an excuse to hit the toy store for Toys '4' Tots. (I know there's at least one bin at the Armory Y on 15th). The other good news: Park Slope can't stop, won't stop for no season. Keep having the fun with Whassup: So This is December Edition:

* Thursday, Dec. 1-Sunday, Dec. 4: Cheap Art, 440 Gallery: Nab some pretty things on the cheap at this numerically appropriate holiday sale (art from $4.40 to $440). On sale will be work from the 14 members of this local gallery. Local art, now that's a thoughtful Christmas present which will also confirm all your family's assumptions about what an insufferably crunchy place Park Slope is. Everybody wins! Hours vary by day.

[FiPS Was There...] Chili Takedown At The Bell House Gets Hot

We here at FIPS spend a hell of a lot of time out and about in Brooklyn, attending outdoor concerts, comedy shows and various other events. So [FIPS Was There...] is where we're gonna' talk about all this shit.

The grand-pappy of Matt Timm's cook-off contests, the original Chili Takedown, set Brooklyn mouths happily a-burnin' yesterday in its 9th incarnation. Contestants, some of whom have been around since the beginning, brewed their beany cauldrons on a line of tables in front of the Bell House stage, filling the room with the unmistakable warm, tangy, deep aroma of America's most chuck-waggonest of meals.

This Takedown did not attract quite the crazy-sized crowd as last month's baconfest. Perhaps that is because the chili versions are more known and more frequent. Perhaps that is also because bacon activates certain drool centers in the brain that are nearly irresistible. The chilis caused their own Pavlovian munch preparations in the mouths of Timms' guests, though, as bacon joined oxtail and duck fat as some of the chilified meats.

COME ON OUT: FIPS And Google New York Happy Hour (And A Free Dinner)!

Let’s not pretend that the holidays aren’t stressful as hell. Gifts to buy, family to see – it’s like a month and a half full of obligations. But if there’s one thing that we here at FIPS have learned, it’s that booze is the best way to cope through all the ho ho hos. So we’ve teamed up with Google New York to throw a pretty kick-ass holiday happy hour. And you’re invited!

Join us on Tuesday, December 6th at Union Hall from 7-9pm for an absolutely free happy hour. That’s right – FREE...until we blaze through Google's budget and get pushed out of the back area by bocce players. Think of it as a great way to celebrate the holidays without the pressures of pretending to like your family. Happy Chrisanukahwanza and all that shit!
