[Win This]: An Invite to Pork Slope's August 15th Pre-Opening Party

FiPS readers! The time has finally come to squeeze into your best pair of tight jeans & lace up your ass-kicking boots. Come August 18th on the late, great Patrick Swayze's birthday, Pork Slope, the ridiculously-named bar, partially inspired by the 1989 film Road House, will finally open its doors for business (hopefully you've been preparing by growing out a sweet-ass mullet over the past few months).

As mentioned when we first broke the news back on April Fools Day, Pork Slope is the newest venture from Dale Talde, David Massoni and John Bush, AKA the Talde crew. A casual bar designed in the spirit of bars that they'd want to hang out in, it will include pitchers of beer, a pool table & a decidedly pork-laden menu of bar food.

Since we love you guys and want you to be as cool as humanly possible, we've put together a lil' contest that will grant TWO lucky FiPS readers a ticket (and one for a guest!) into Pork Slope's August 15th pre-opening party. If you recall from our initial announcement about the place, they're planning on making said party a raucous event wherein at least one person will head off into the night in a squad car. After all, that's how Swayze would’ve wanted it.

FiPS Exclusive: A Peek Inside Construction At Owl Farm

After old-classic-filthy Irish bar Harry Boland's met its tax-related MC Hammer-esque demise, we all wondered what was going to happen with the empty space. Was it doomed to become another Starbucks or PetCo? Would FiPS finally get that salad place? Turns out brothers Mike and Ben Wiley, who are part owners of Bar Great Harry in Carroll Gardens and Mission Dolores on 4th avenue in the Slope, snatched the space up and will be transforming it into a new joint called Owl Farm.

Mike and Ben Wiley

Mike and Ben, along with middle brother Seth, have spent the past few months renovating the space, which was named after Hunter S. Thompson's old ranch in Woody Creek, CO (it's also a fair homage for the shit that used to go down at Harry's). The brothers recently gave FIPS a preview of what the place is gonna look like for their (hopefully) soft opening on Friday, June 15th.

When that happens, be prepared for a whopping 28 beers on tap, plus two cask lines...

Rick Santorum May Be Out, But His Cocktail Is Still In

Photo by Bryan Bruchman / The Brooklyn Paper

Rick Santorum may have suspended his presidential campaign, but that hasn't stopped the folks at Pacific Standard from selling their frothy, brown "Santorum" cocktail. “It’s the most popular cocktail on the menu, so we’re keeping it,” manager Jeremy Hunt recently told The Local.

Sweet.

And if you haven't done so yet, please take this fun quiz designed by FiPS writer Thomas to see if you can tell the difference between Santorum the person, Santorum the drink and the Santorum the disgusting bi-product of anal sex.

Behold, the Latest Creation of Team Talde: Pork Slope

The exterior is cheekily plastered with paper pig snouts.

If there's one thing that we can all take away from the 1989 film Road House, starring an impressively-coiffed, tightly-jeaned Patrick Swayze, it's that many of life’s problems can be solved by kicking. Punching is also acceptable. In short, its message is timeless.

As such, when David Massoni, John Bush & Dale Talde, the trio behind Talde, announced in late February that they'd be transforming the old Aunt Suzie's space into a Road House-style joint, we here at FIPS were quite intrigued.

Would they be decorating the walls of the bar with chicken wire?

Would they have to fight off evil henchmen on a regular basis?

Would they be hiring a bouncer who, when pushed too far, would rip your throat out?

Yesterday, we stopped by the space to get a look at the bar's progress, learn what Road House had to do with it and, since they love us, become the first to find out what the heck they were going to call the place.

PARK SLOPE MOMMIES TO Get GROOMED AND DRUNK at 5th ave's Beauty Bar

If you've been to Beauty Bar on Manhattan's East Side, or any of its outposts in ten cities across America, then you know what to expect: retro-chic furnishings, chrome dome hair dryers, a mildly amused DJ spinning scratchy bee-bop tracks as hipsters & greasers do the twist on a checkered floor. These places are dark and loud and too-cool-for-school. You fight for a seat at the small crowded bar and contemplate whether it's a good idea to get a manicure from a boozed, tatted up chick hunched over a desk lamp (the answer, by the way, is yes).

When I first got wind that Beauty Bar was opening in Park Slope proper, I thought someone forget to do their research. I just couldn't imagine this scene jiving with the polished establishments on 5th Avenue. I found it hard to imagine them serving cocktails to the citizens of Strollerville. But then I remembered what I learned in business camp (no, really - business camp): localize
