[Events]: Brooklyn Doesn't Forget

As the weekend approaches, Brooklyn prepares to join the rest the country in paying tribute. I’ll be honest: I’m the kind of person who prefers to spend days like this at home, away from the crowds. But I am a strong believer in the power of community, so for those of you who would like to spend it with others, any of these events would be a good choice.

Rethinking Memorial: Ten Interactive Sites for Remembering 9/11,
DUMBO (various locations): Ten artists explore what a memorial can be by creating ten of their own for the public. (Saturday, 9/10, 11am - 5pm)

[SPELL CHECK SQUAD] Failure at The Pavilion

I guess our friends at The Pavilion didn't have the benefit of spell check, huh?

LOOK! BROOKLYN TROLLEY TRACKS!

Aw, Brooklyn used to be so old-timey and cute! Before there was the PPW bike lane, there was an actual trolley that used to haul everyone's asses around NY's most important borough.

They were doing some construction around Grand Army Plaza last week, and apparently the trolley tracks were visible after they ripped up a good chunk of the road.

I'm sure everyone loved the shit out of the trolley until the NBBL's predecessor, Neighbors Against Trolleys And All Things Cute (NATAATC) got the city to shut them down.

I mean, probably.

Important Things To Know About Union Street

Ok, so true: because I live on Union Street, and because the Park Slope Food Coop is on Union Street, and because so is Hunan Delight, and because it takes me right the hell into Carroll Gardens, and right the hell over to the R train too, I DO have a soft spot in my heart for it. Which is, I guess, why it was so much fun to read all about the history of it on Forgotten NY.

You should read about it too.

Safety Flyers Popping Up in Brooklyn

A few weekends back yet another woman was attacked in Sunset Park as she entered her apartment building (this is officially becoming the summer of everyone-please-watch-your-backs). A FIPS reader recently sent us an email with this flyer attached, and said they were being handed out by the 72nd Pct. via CB7:

They forgot to add the 11th measure: If you sense someone may be following you, pull your cell phone out and speak loudly into it: "Man, I just can't seem to get rid of these GODAWFUL, ITCHY CRABS!"

Seriously, though. Stay safe, Park Slope.
