The Eagles Clothes sign, atop the factory building on 3rd Avenue and 6th Street, was a part of the Brooklyn skyline since 1951. U-haul, owner of the building since the late-1980’s, brought down the vintage sign last week to make space for a two floor expansion. With the Eagles sign goes another piece of its generation’s audacious, historic Brooklyn.

Science-y Test Maybe Finds Old Locomotive Under Atlantic Ave...Maybe Not.

The Brooklyn rumor mill is reporting mumblings of a large, local cavernous tunnel filled with an unknown object, and no, I’m not talking about Kim Kardashian’s recently-announced pregnancy.

Special science-y tests have detected a large, 20 foot metal object, rumored to be a 19th century locomotive, far inside a half-mile long tunnel near Hicks Street. “It’s like finding a giant hoard of gold,” said Bob Diamond, founder of the Brooklyn Historic Railway Association. “That locomotive has been sitting there since the outbreak of the Civil War — it’s like a living piece of history."

Here are my top 5 favorite NYC Photos from the recent department of archives launch!

 

If you’re a history buff with a specific fondness for New York City history like myself, then I'm sure you've already heard that the Department of Archives launched a massive digital collection of nearly 900,000 photographs of the city that span over the course of 150 years. Apparently all 8 million of us jumped for collective joy and made a beeline for the website, because it immediately went under for maintenance seconds after being launched due to overwhelming traffic. I am happy to report that as of now, the site is up running, so you should definitely check it out. 

Last Tuesday, Time Out New York narrowed down what they thought were the 50 best photos of NYC from 1849 to 2012. I've narrowed that down even further to my top five favorites:

Important Things To Know About Union Street

Ok, so true: because I live on Union Street, and because the Park Slope Food Coop is on Union Street, and because so is Hunan Delight, and because it takes me right the hell into Carroll Gardens, and right the hell over to the R train too, I DO have a soft spot in my heart for it. Which is, I guess, why it was so much fun to read all about the history of it on Forgotten NY.
