[Events]: Brooklyn Doesn't Forget

As the weekend approaches, Brooklyn prepares to join the rest the country in paying tribute. I’ll be honest: I’m the kind of person who prefers to spend days like this at home, away from the crowds. But I am a strong believer in the power of community, so for those of you who would like to spend it with others, any of these events would be a good choice.

 
Rethinking Memorial: Ten Interactive Sites for Remembering 9/11, DUMBO (various locations): Ten artists explore what a memorial can be by creating ten of their own for the public. (Saturday, 9/10, 11am - 5pm)

Woody Allen’s Manhattan at BAM, FORT GREENE: Ok, I’ll contradict myself immediately and say this is one I would consider going to. I watched Manhattan for the first time in the summer of 2001 and it’s just a beautiful love letter to the city. (Sunday, 9/11 at 2:00, 4:30, 7:00, 9:30pm) 

 Memorial Concert at the Grand Army Plaza Library, NORTH PARK SLOPE: The Sherman Chamber Ensemble will be playing elegies in memory of those lost that day as well as in the ensuing wars. (Sunday, 9/11 at 1:30PM)

Celebration of Life! “Be-In” in the Warren/St. Marks Community Garden, PARK SLOPE: Local artists commemorate the day with a host of activities including song, dance and sculptures. Bring potluck refreshments and food to share. (Sunday, 9/11 from 2:00-7:00pm) 

A Day of Remembrance at the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music, the Community Bookstore & the Congregation Beth Elohim, PARK SLOPE: These three Park Slope institutions come together to bring the neighborhood various events throughout the day. They include music, dance, readings and an interfaith service.  (Sunday, 9/11. Check the website for event details)

SANCTUARY STILL: Brooklyn Reflects at St. Ann’s, BROOKLYN HEIGHTS: The East River bridges served as a lifeline between us and lower Manhattan on that day. St. Ann’s parish opened their doors and offered sanctuary to many who’d probably never even considered coming to Brooklyn before. They do it again ten years later. This is a big one. From their website: “The program will include spoken word, music, and video presentations. Presenters will include elected officials, first responders from the fire and police departments, Brooklyn-based authors, faith leaders, and community members. Musical presentations will be provided by The Brooklyn Symphony Orchestra, the String Orchestra of Brooklyn, the Grace and Spiritus Chorale of Brooklyn, and the St. Ann’s Choir.” (Sunday, 9/11 at 3:00PM)
