Roller Disco Is Another Retro Thing To Do in Prospect Park

Image via dremlandrollerrink.comProving there is no end to the voracious appetite for quirky, retro, low-impact activities in Brooklyn, make way for “Lola Star’s Dreamland Roller Disco” in Prospect Park. “I like to create this other-worldly kind of vibe where you feel transported outside of New York City and into dreamland,” said Dianna Carlin (aka Lola Star) about the parties she’ll be organizing Friday nights this summer. Expect a mix of classic 80s tunes and throwback fashions ‘cause you know everyone going to this thing has vintage, or at least fake-vintage, clothes for such an occasion--including accessories; I bet someone shows up with a snap bracelet and is a total tool about it.

Ben Folds Will Play For An All White (Wearing) Audience in Prospect Park

Everyone knows that white is the most formal of formal attire, reserved for the most important people at their most important events. Like people who go to a Ben Folds concert in Prospect Park. BF’s performance will be part of the entertainment at a picnic this Saturday to raise money for the Prospect Park Alliance. The event will enforce a strict all-white-everything dress code.

"Wearing all white boils down to a unifying theme of the evening,” said Nicole Benjamin-Sathre, co-founder of Hand Made Events, as if that wouldn't be the theme of a Ben Folds show in Prospect Park, regardless of dress code. "It’s very beautiful. It’s simple and elegant. When you get a whole crowd of people doing it, everything flows together," she goes on to say, coming dangerously close to sounding like a conservative in a Onion article. And why is white so important to the event? "You wouldn’t get the same effect if people were in purple and green or anything!” So white is the only unifying color that would create a welcoming atmosphere of casual elegance . Not purple, not green and certainly not black, brown, red nor yellow!

Where Should The Kentile Sign Go?

Photo credit: Tim BartlettThe Kentile sign has been saved, sorta: the sign will be rebuilt elsewhere.  The writers of Fucked in Park Slope came up with some ideas of where it could go:

Smith & 9th Station: A relatively small change to the skyline and the MTA gets to deal with it.

The Watchtower: The World HQ of Jehovah's Witnesses. And it already has a roof capable of supporting a sign. WWJD?

Rat Race Comes to Prospect Park (It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad Borough)

Hidden Cash, the Twitter "game" where a San Francisco real estate investor hides money around your city and tweets clues, enticing people to desperately scramble against each other for 50 bucks and a Silver Dollar while tweeting thanks to @HiddenCash for the opportunity, came to Prospect Parkthis Saturday. At first, it looked like the game would be limited to Central Park:

But before long Hidden Cash revealed that 19 envelopes had been hidden in our very own Prospect Park:

Bow and Arrow Shooting Range Opens in Gowanus

Gotham Archery, a 7,500-square–foot archery center, opens this week at Baltic and Nevins Streets in Gowanus. In case you’re wondering, an archery center is like the medieval version of a gun range: you stand around using a deadly weapon to shoot projectiles at a target, only that weapon is a bow and arrow. You know, just like Robin Hood and Link in Legend of Zelda.

“Literally anybody is able to do this sport,” says co-owner Ken Hsu, so feel free to bring along the kids and have them play with sharp sticks. There are 20 lanes for beginners and 10 for experienced archers. A $25 introductory class (mandatory for first timers) includes a 15 minute lesson from a certified instructor and 45 minutes of practice time.  “We’re…trying to make that first experience great.”
