Judy Chicago's Lady Parts Will Light Up The Brooklyn Sky

Image via prospectpark.orgOn April 26, fireworks will fly above Prospect Park, celebrating vaginas everywhere. The explosive display, a 20 minute show jam packed with hundreds of fireworks, 1200 road flares and 1600 feet of LED lights, is the work of feminist artist Judy Chicago.

Brooklynites may already be familiar with Chicago’s “The Dinner Party.” The installation features place settings for important women throughout history complete with vagina and butterfly imagery on the plates. “The Dinner Party” has gotten around since Chicago created it in 1979 before finally settling down for good at the Brooklyn Museum in 2007. Chicago’s fireworks extravaganza draws inspiration from this, her most famous work.

What's The Deal with Keith Hernandez "Magic Loogie" Bobbleheads?

Image via brooklyncyclones.comTwenty-Five years ago this July 5th, a show named The Seinfeld Chronicles premiered. Despite low ratings, the NBC picked it up for a short first season that aired in 1990 as simply Seinfeld. Yadda, yadda, yadda, and this July 5th the  Brooklyn Cyclones are giving away Keith Hernandez “Magic Loogie” bobbleheads to the first 2,500 attendees in celebration of Seinfeld’s anniversary.

The bobblehead captures Keith Hernandez’s appearance on the Seinfeld episode in which he bickers with Kramer and Newman over a “magic loogie” incident (a riff on Oliver Stone’s JFK and its “magic bullet”) and then hooks up with Elaine. Right down to the mullet.

Fifth Ave BID Wants YOU to Design Their Logo

Image via facebook.com/parkslopefifthavenueCalling all wannabe graphic artists! Yeah, you, in the back corner of the Tea Lounge. The Park Slope Fifth Ave Business Improvement District (aka, BID, aka, the stretch of 5th Ave between Flatbush and 18th Steet) is holding a contest to redesign their logo. They would like the logo to reflect what they consider is the Fifth Ave area: "a vibrant mix of independently-owned shops, world-class restaurants and popular nightlife spots." I guess they're looking for a hipster drinking craft beer, pushing a stroller, while eating Blue Ribbon?

PPW Bike Lane as Analyzed by Presidental Election Analysts

Images via stevencanplan.com/themuppetmindset.blogspot.com/gothamist.comNot that this will change anyone’s mind on the matter, but the FiveThirtyEight blog -- of Nate Silver and Obama 2012 fame -- agrees with the DOT’s conclusions about the Prospect Park West bike lane. This new analysis, which will not have any effect on any decision, comes two weeks before Seniors For Safety, Neighbors For Better Bike Lanes and their allies must convince a judge of their case’s validity. Because if stats that showed a decrease in number of accidents wasn’t enough to stop these people, why would an analysis about traffic flow make a difference?

Barclays Center To Become "So Brooklyn" With Green Roof

The Barclays Center roof will be going green, like, literally, thanks to a rooftop garden planned by developer Forest City Ratner. While they officially call this an “amenity,” designed to improve the view from the residential towers expected to go up in the coming years, the green roof is also expected to help with the persistent noise issues.
The green roof had actually been planned as part of the original construction, in order to get the Barclays a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certification. Since they were able to get certified without it, the green roof was put on hold. Because, you know, why go above and beyond when you don’t have to? But why now? “It was the right time to introduce this concept as an amenity for all of the residents that will be surrounding the arena, and for people of the community,” said Forest City Ratner spokeswoman Ashley Cotton.
