Roller Disco Is Another Retro Thing To Do in Prospect Park
Proving there is no end to the voracious appetite for quirky, retro, low-impact activities in Brooklyn, make way for “Lola Star’s Dreamland Roller Disco” in Prospect Park. “I like to create this other-worldly kind of vibe where you feel transported outside of New York City and into dreamland,” said Dianna Carlin (aka Lola Star) about the parties she’ll be organizing Friday nights this summer. Expect a mix of classic 80s tunes and throwback fashions ‘cause you know everyone going to this thing has vintage, or at least fake-vintage, clothes for such an occasion--including accessories; I bet someone shows up with a snap bracelet and is a total tool about it.
Carlin previously ran the Dreamland Roller Disco in Coney Island for two years. “It was heartbreaking, but I knew it wasn’t the end. I knew it was something I would reinvent bigger and better,” she said. Presumably bigger and better is going to be some serious old school roller disco at the LeFrak Center at Lakeside. “For the past 10 years there hasn’t been a lot of roller disco in Brooklyn and I’m trying to bring that back,” notes Carlin about the pastime that last experienced any real popularity 30-40 years ago. Then again nothing says “take my money,” in Park Slope like fake old timey shit.
Dreamland Roller Disco rocks the rink Fridays all summer, starting with a Flashdance themed party on July 11. And, of course, there are plans to bring carnival and burlesque performances to Dreamland later this summer. Because mashing up retro stuff is fucking hot. Especially if it includes a sanitized, non-threatening interpretation of Depression Era carnies.
