Whassup: Body-Mind Problem Edition
As I write this, it feels like early summer in NY--or any freakin' day of the year in San Diego (why don't I live in California again?). That means summer dresses, beach bodies and carnal thoughts. As a minor corrective to this corporal obsession, FIPS offers a brain-heavy Whassup this week:
* Thursday, April 28: Science Opera, Lincoln Center: Park Slope's own Secret Science Club seems to be branching out from its monthly beer-soaked lecture series at the Bell House (formerly at Union Hall). Following Monday's "Moon" movie night, they're co-hosting a cocktail party after Thursday's Seance on a Wet Afternoon performance by City Opera. Science brains in attendance will be housed in the skulls of Dave Sulzer, a neuroscientist who composes music from brainwaves, and David Maiullo, who is a Ghostbuster. (Note: He is actually a physicist who discredits supernatural claims--in a JUMPSUIT! Note: probably not.) Opera at 8pm, $12. Cocktails free afterward.
* Sunday, May 1: Gutterbilly BBQ, Bell House: Nothing like a punked-out BBQ to kick off summer. Join the "psychobilly" Arkhams for their 5th anniversary, which will be flavored with the smokey aromas of Gutterbilly's 'Pulled Pork and Mac n Sleaze BBQ." 6 pm doors, $13 DOS.
* Tuesday, May 3: Adult Education: "Social Anxiety," Union Hall. I'm pretty sure the Venn diagram of nerds who like lectures and people with social anxiety issues forms a perfect circle. Overlapping significantly with that circle is the population of Park Slope. Join your stuttering, straight-A peers at this month's Adult Education offering. Hear brief, engaging talks on youthful dating, stoned parents, and the embarrassments of our gross bodies. 7:30 doors, $5.
* Tuesday, May 3: Pun-derdome 300, Southpaw: Personally, I need puns in my life like a baker kneads dough. HA! Outside of the bedroom, nothing so pleasurable causes quite so many groans. So, come appreciate the richness of the English language at this audience-judged punning competition. You can observe, compete, or just roll your eyes like cinnamon. 7:30 doors.
* Tuesday, May 3: Cinco de Mayo Beer Dinner, The Vanderbilt: Prospect Heights' Vanderbilt gets the "Drinko de Mayo" (am I right, broheims?) started early with a Mexican-inspired feast complemented by blanco tequila and spicy sangrita. Four courses for $40, 7:30 pm.
