There Is No 'Sandwich Revolution' In Park Slope

NY Mag's Cheap Eats issue came out last week, and amongst all of the suggestions of fab, delicious cheap shit to eat, they have this break-out chart of the best turkey sandwiches in the city. There are six sandwiches on the list, and shockingly, four of them come from Brooklyn--that's like 66.9% of the list! Only, BREAKING: none of those bitches come from Park Slope.

NOT. A. ONE.

Translation: we have no "sandwich revolution" in Park Slope.

The top Brooklyn sandwiches included:

• A triple decker from Court Street Grocers - "The best triple-decker in town. The upper level is nicely roasted breast; the lower, dark meat confited in duck fat."
• An ode to Thanksgiving croissanwich-sandy at Smith Canteen - "Buttermilk-brined bird, house-made sage mayo, Missouri bacon on a house-made everything croissant."
• A big fat traditional turkey sandwich from Mile End - "They brine it, smoke it, steam it, slice it to order, slap it on excellent housemade rye with Gulden’s Spicy Brown, and more or less trick this turkey into thinking it’s pastrami."
• And last but not least, the "dark horse" contender at Henry Public - "These anti-white-meat pioneers in the gourmet-turkey-sandwich movement braise leg meat in milk and pile it on juice-sopping slices of toasted Pullman. Fried onions add delicious crunch."

That stings a lil bit.

I mean, sure: you can get some delish sandwiches around this mofo (City Sub, Bierkraft, 'Snice, Russo's etc) but like, apparently there is no REVOLUTION happening here? And I guess, in fairness, NY Mag has a point.

We've bitched and moaned for eons about the fact that there is no Jewish Deli in Park Slope, so that entire segment of sandwiches is immediately eliminated. And the focus around this nabe seems to be way the hell more on burgers and pizza than anything else these days. Our one shining hope at the moment is that Zito's Sandwich Shoppe comes in and sweeps the category next year, though do Italians even eat turkey?

On the bright side, one other Park Slope business *did* get called out in the general Cheap Eats category:

Giuseppina's, Lucali's S. Slope sister-pizza/calzone joint. NY mag especially digs the calzones: "we’d go for the calzone every time, preferably stuffed with marinated artichoke hearts, and a bowl of peppery marinara sauce on the side."

AGAIN WITH THE MOTHERFUCKING PIZZA PLACE!??

While good news for Giuseppina's, this obvs does nothing for our lackluster sandwich situation.
