WHASSUP: Hotter Than Hell Edition

Summer is fully junk-punching us this week. The AC is flowing as if it were free, sweat is pooling in the streets, and the subway is like the sauna at the NYSC in Chelsea. How are we supposed to beat the heat when the rivers and waterways are abominable and public pools are like swimming in tea cups of urine? Drink lots of fluids and have a good, old fashioned water fight in the park.

I suggest rounding out your evening with some entertainment—something that'll take your mind off your pit stained work clothes. You know the Loius CK bit about butt sweat?

Hit me up with your favorite way to beat the heat. Rmember to include your favorite events from the past week to win...well, nothing.

So, WHASSUP this week you stinker Slopers? Here's WHASSUP:

Thursday, 7/10, Illya Kuryaki & The Valderramas/Choc Quib Town/RVSB, Prospect Park Band Shell: Ever try to combine hip hop, rock, funk, and salsa? These fuckers do and it’s boner jamz all night long. FREE, 6pm doors

Friday, 7/11, The Kings of Karaoke, Union Hall: Do you like karaoke? If not, I’m barking up the wrong tree. I think it improves the human experience to throw back a few and sing ‘Summer Lovin’ with the first willing partner you can find. FREE, 12am

Easy Beach Transit for Drunk Hipster Babies, Now Coming to Park Slope!

Image via Making Magique.com

Good news, people. Your cheap asses will still be able to go to the beach this summer due to the quick rebuilding process at NYC beaches after the douche parade that was Hurricane Sandy. BUT, I cannot say that public transit will be your easiest bet. But...there’s a solution for everything.

Last summer the Rockabus made pickups from Williamsburg out to Far Rockaway and Jacob Riis Park, and this summer due to growing needs and the desire to support our beach communities, Rockabus is expanding with pickups in Park Slope (Grand Army Plaza) and the East Village (and of course, still Williamsburg). This pretty much means that the beaches will solely host drunk hipster babies and their surly cohorts.

Good Riddance, Summer: 5 Things I Hate About The Worst Season Of Them All

Some people totally love summertime: the sunshine, the beaches and the fun outdoor activities. I am not one of those people.

I will gladly take a blizzard with unplowed streets and dirty snow piles over the stinking underground steam room of a summer subway station. I’d rather be bundled up for warmth than half naked, sweating my ass off in yet another Park Slope restaurant with inadequate air conditioning. Besides… I look really cute in layers.

So with the summer season unofficially behind us, let’s take this time to wish the hot, humid, and all-together disgusting summer months a big, fat goodbye by doing what this site does best: bitching. Here are the 5 things I totally hate most about summer (and after the jump, head to the comments section and give me yours!)

A FiPS Guide To the 5 Best Getaways Within An Hour From The Slope

Image via Tumblr.com

We love Brooklyn, but sometimes to appreciate the charms of NYC, you need a break. So, to aid in your imminent end-of-summer planning, I've picked my 5 favorite getaways that are located just outside the city.

Croton Point Park / Photo via www.new-york.eventseekr.com

1. For the Outdoorsy-Type: Croton Point Park; Croton-on-Hudson, NY

What To Do: Camping, picnicing, boating, fishing, and hiking are all at your fingertips at the Croton Point Park. Take a cooler and head out for the day or stay overnight at one of their cabins or BYO tent.

Getting There: Rent a Car and be there in 1.5 hours (which is advised, and yes, it's a little more than an hour) or Metro North to Croton Harmon + 1.3 mi walk

How Much?: A 6-person cabin will run you $75 or a tent site for $50, plus the cost of rental car and road snacks. Free to visit.

Yelp Welcomes Summer with Brooklyn Summerfest Bash!

What better way to kick off the first full day of Summer than to sample yummy bites from local restaurants like DuMontKiwiana and The Red Hook Lobster Pound WHILE sipping on complimentary cockails by Red Stag Jim Beam and Effen Vodka WHILE checking out the fantastic view of Lady Liberty at Red Hook's Liberty Warehouse? (and that's just the tip of the vendor iceberg, people.)

This year, Yelp Brooklyn is hosting Summerfest, a massive party with tons of great food, booze, beer, wine and music from our favorite Brooklyn vendors. The event is happening on Thursday, June 21st from 8-10PM.

 And guess what? IT'S FREE.*
