Hurricane Sandy Is Already Causing Damage To the Slope (Damn you, Sandy!!!!)

A downed tree on Garfield, between 6th/7th avenues

The above photo, taken on Garfield between 6th/7th Avenues, was sent in by a FiPS tipster, who said the massive tree was uprooted and fell into the street around 1PM today. Anyone else noticing damage in other parts of the 'hood? If so, let us know in the comments!

Another view of the downed tree on Garfield Place

Ok, it's hard to see what's going on here, but FIPS reader Bucktown Intifada sent this along: Here's a pic of Sandy fucking up the new Dino BBQ on Union b/w 3rd and 4th Aves.  The roof came off and smashed a couple of vintage Corvettes in the lot next door.

Daym.

Here are some Fun Facts About Hurricane Sandy

Information is power.  And since many of us will be without power after Sandy hits, we thought we'd put together a few Hurricane Sandy fun facts.   Whether you're completely ignorant, or just temporarily within a "cone of uncertainty," here are a few things you should know about Hurricane Sandy.

  • A lot of people don't know this, but Hurricane Sandy is named after two-time Tony award-winning actress, Sandy Dennis ("A Thousand Clowns," "Any Wednesday")
  • The Delaware National Guard has been mobilized to help residents deal with the storm, which means that if Maryland is smart, they'll launch their attack right now.

Here are Some things to do while holed up during hurricane sandy

Hurricane Sandy is nearly upon us, and while there's always a chance that she may tiptoe past the Slope much like Hurricane Irene did last year, it's far more likely that she's going to roll in, drop her pants and shit all over us. In the event that we're looking at the latter, we will have to find ways to entertain ourselves within the walls of our Park Slope apartments for extended periods of time. We may even have to do this without power (GASP!).

So if you're looking for something to do during the rain, wind and possible snowfall (RIGHT?!), here's a list of Hurricane-friendly games and activities:

Hurricane Sandy: Here She Comes

Ok folks: let's get it started

Have you been hearing about this hurricane Sandy thing-y? Cause shit is now getting real.

The MTA has announced that they will be shutting down their whole damn system tonight at 7pm in preparation for Sandy. That means, subways, buses, trains, planes, automobiles. Fine, I don't think the MTA owns any planes, but if they did, they'd be shutting them down too.

The Owner of the crushed car on Garfield Is Looking to His Fellow Brooklyn residents for support

If you wandered around the neighborhood in the days following Hurricane Sandy, there's a good chance you saw the GIGANTIC tree that had fallen onto and crushed a white Honda on Garfield between 6th and 7th Avenues. The owner is hoping that some of the few hundred people who stopped to gawk and take photos of his car will pitch in a few shillings to help him get back on the road:

Hi Everyone - Sandy left most of Park Slope untouched, but unkindly felled a tree that completely crushed my car. I live in Brooklyn but teach in Newark, NJ. Without my car I cannot reliably get to school, pick up 2 other teachers in my carpool, or get home quickly in the event that my wife goes into labor (she's 8.5 months pregnant).

I'm not one to ask random people for financial help, but the gap between the insurance payout and a replacement car will be thousands of dollars. Any assistance you can give will get me back on the road!

Thank you!

Here's the link if you want to donate. So far he's raised about half of his goal.

(UPDATE: Yes, we realize that lots of people are in need at the moment, and plenty are in more dire situations, but we've been covering that aspect of the hurricane's aftermath as well. Please feel free to battle it out in the comments as to who is allowed to ask for help and who isn't.)
