HELP TWO BOOTS PIZZA SHUTTLE SUPPLIES TO HARD-HIT AREAS TODAY

Though donating money to the Red Cross is a fantastic way to contribute in the relief efforts of Hurricane Sandy, there are people in immediate need that those donations may not get to right away -- people in the Rockaways and Breezy Point, for example. Two Boots Brooklyn is making a supply run out to those people today, so if you can help out, please see below:

"Due to lack of communication many relief centers have too much while others do not have enough. Following the surge of volunteers this past weekend, the areas hardest hit are still in need.

Today we we are going to areas that are not near the centers in an effort to reach those unable or too frightened to leave their homes. We are in contact with a National Guardsman who will direct us do the under-served neighborhoods.

We are sending hot food and sandwiches. We could use:

HURRICANE SANDY AFTERMATH: OPEN POST

Shopping carts full of contaminated food at Fairway in Red Hook/photo via AP/Seth Wenig

I'm so T-O-T-A-L-L-Y blown away by all of the amazing volunteers, donors, and just general kindness I've seen in our neighborhood and beyond in response to Sandy recovery efforts.

Many of our FIPS writers were out and about volunteering all weekend, and we'll continue sharing as many volunteer and donation opps as we can on FIPS and on Twitter

What are you guys seeing? Did you volunteer this weekend? Make it out to any of the badly affected areas? Donate stuff at the Armory? Tell us how our post Sandy world is looking from your perspective.

As a sidenote, here's a great article on the importance of really checking out what's needed by various communities and organizations before making donations. Needs are literally changing hour by hour (as anyone who has donated at the Park Slope Armory knows), and many organizations no longer need any clothing, water or food. So make sure to double check before donating, to ensure you're contributing needed items that won't go to waste.

We did it! The NYC Marathon has been canceled.

Well there you have it, folks. After a ton of bitching on social media, some nasty headlines, and a post or two of our own, the NYC Marathon has officially been canceled. I haven't been this excited about something getting canceled since Cavemen. Now let's get back to helping out with disaster relief, okay?

Sandy Relief In Action At the Armory [UN-F'D IN PARK SLOPE]

Caught on film so it can't be refuted: Park Slopers doin' a whole lotta good this morning and afternoon at the Park Slope Armory on Eigth Avenue between 14th and 15th Streets. Tens of volunteers showed up by 8 AM to unload 14 tons of Sandy relief supplies bound for three separate locations off an 18-wheeler. A third of the supplies stayed at the Armory, another third were bound for Red Hook, and another third were headed to Sunset Park.

Your fellow do-gooders in action, friends.
