Rihanna, Greenday added to growing list of Barclays Center Performers

Two more musical acts have been added to the growing list of artists set to perform at the Barclays Center next year:

** Rihanna Will perform on Saturday, May 4, 2013. Tickets go on sale Friday, September 21 at 12PM.

** Greenday Will perform on Wednesday, January 16, 2013 at 8PM.  Tickets go on sale Friday, September 14 at 12PM.

Tickets can be purchased on the Barclays Center site, or on Ticketmaster's website. Or from some nasty Craigslist scalper. Ticket prices have not yet been listed, but if they follow in the footsteps of the other musical acts, you can expect to pay anywhere from $30-$10,000.

I'd love to see Rihanna team up with Tré Cool to sing a quiet duet of "All By Myself."

Welcome to Whassup: NY Week Edition

This is the week of the bad memories in New York. But, as the old president said, if we stop spending money, the terrorists win. Also, the recession wins (which is actually true). More importantly, there's a lot of joy and music and alcohol to be experienced, which is a fantastic way to celebrate this city. Welcome to Whassup: NY Week Edition:

* Friday, Sep. 7: Lady Lamb, Rock Shop: One of my favorite East Coast performers, Lady Lamb the Beekeeper, is a tiny little ball of powerful voice. Once again, she's opening for some bands that I don't know, but that are probably pretty cool themselves. But mostly this is just evidence of how much talent there is to be seen in Brooklyn. Come for the opener. 8:30pm, $10.

* Saturday, Sep. 8: Punklandia, Williamsburg Park: The eight-year Chicago punk gather, Riot Fest, plants a combat boot in Brooklyn for the first time this year. If you check out the Chicago line-up, well, it's much better. But Brooklyn gets a pretty good show, too, with the gypsy punks of Gogol Bordello and 80's punk OGs the Descendents headlining. Notable punkists down the ballot include the Screaming Females. Mostly, though, it's one of the last gasps of the summer music festival season. Hold on to 16 as long as you can. 2pm, $55.

Whassup: Thank God We're Not in Tampa Edition

via thedailydolt.com

Calm down, everyone. I know we've all got the Paul Ryan fever. Those dreamy eyes. That rock-solid athlete's body. That Ayn Rand-infested brain. The Republican National Convention is in full effect, and so I know all of Park Slope is horny with political rage. Channel that emotion into something worthwhile -- alcohol-fueled revelry -- with this week's lineup of events. It's Whassup: Thank God We're Not in Tampa Edition:

* Thursday, Aug. 30: Vaselines, Bell House: The revived popularity of 90's alt/grunge bands continues unabated (it's not just me, right?). The Vaselines were one of those bands Kurt Cobain pulled into mainstream awareness -- remember the achingly mournful "Jesus Don't Want Me for a Sunbeam" on the Unplugged album? Yeah, Vaselines song. The group also released its second album a couple years ago, called "Sex with an Ex," a pretty good metaphor for returning to the music of your teenage years, I think. 8pm Doors, $22 DOS.

* Saturday, Sep. 1: Dr. Who Premiere, Weigh Station: The Weigh Station -- that steampunk-themed, sorta-jazz bar in Prospect Heights -- is pretty much designed to be a Dr. Who screening spot. The bathroom is inside a Tardis, for geekdom's sake! (The Tardis being the eponymous hero's time-traveling phonebooth/vehicle.) Don't be embarrassed to dork out -- you'll be among friends. Doors 4pm, Screening 6pm, FREE.

FiPS WAS THERE: Louis C.K. At The Bell House

Photo via Louis C.K.'s Twitter Page

When Louis C.K. walked out onto The Bell House stage last night, he held up a notebook -- the comedian's universal sign for "this is new material" --  and modestly disclosed that the event was not going to be the greatest show, which was why the tickets were only $10. "You are falling on a grenade for a later, better-paying audience," he explained with a chuckle.

No one was surprised by this caveat. The event itself was called, "Louis C.K. Working On His New Hour Of Material," and based on the fact that all three shows sold out in 3 hours after only The Bell House Tweeted about the event, it's clear that no one gave a shit. The 44 year-old, ginger-haired comedian constantly produces nothing but stellar work (and yes, that includes Pootie Tang). Louis C.K. could have stood on stage and farted for an hour, and some blogger would have stayed up late last night penning a thoughtful, 1,000-word article about how the pacing and nuances of each individual sound and smell just gave birth to a new wave of alternative comedy. And only a comedian like Louis C.K. can workshop new material for sixty minutes not once, not twice, but THREE times in one night. I can only imagine the mental notes or feverish scribbling that went down in The Bell House's green room between the 7PM, 9PM and 11PM shows.

The Brooklyn Bike Jumble is Coming Back to Park Slope

I think the title and image say it all, but in case they don't, the fourth annual Brooklyn Bike Jumble is coming to Park Slope on September 8 from 10AM to 4PM. Location: the park where Washington's Continental Army got its ass whooped 236 years ago a.k.a. the Old Stone House on 5th Ave and 4th Street (Washington Park if you're nasty).

WTF is a Brooklyn Bike Jumble, you might ask? It's a cycling-themed flea market where indie dealers from all across the country come to hock everything from bargain vintage bikes to super sleek racing bikes that could run up to five grand. Since there will be something for everyone who enjoys riding a bike, now peeps can ditch the creepy craiglist posting for cheap sex bikes and actually have a splendid time comparison shopping from vendors who know what the hell they're talking about.
