Christie's Jamaican Patties Is Given A New Lease on Life

photo by Arthur De Gaeta via the Brooklyn Paper

Jamaican Patties are back on the menu! Back in November, FiPS writer Kerri reported that Christie's Jamaican Patties, a 45 year-old Flatbush mainstay, was closing. It was rumored that landlord Lina Feng was looking to push the pattie joint out in order to make room for higher paying tenants for when doomsday begins the Barclay Center opens its doors. In November, Leng claimed that owner Paul Hayes was two months behind in rent. At the time Hayes said, "She's trying to kick me out. I don't think it's worth the stress; it's killing me."

Well Mr. Hayes's tune has changed for the happier. According to Here's Park Slope, there's been a tentative agreement between Christie's owner and Leng, and the announcement is straight from the pattie's mouth himself:

Mix Is out, Casa Ventura is In

The 7th Avenue restaurant formerly known as Barrio, then Barrio Plates, and then Mix, is transforming into what will be the fourth eatery in just a few months. Next up? The joint's going to be called "Casa Ventura." No word on the opening date or if it'll be run by the previous owner.

With a new "Road House-esque" Resaurant, Will the Ghost of Patrick Swayze Float Around 5th Ave?

Apparently the new restaurant from the Talde Trio, set to replace Aunt Suzie’s this spring, will be channeling the Oscar-screwed 1989 film, Road House. You know, the movie where the NYU grad played by Patrick Swayze elevates the art of bouncing by practicing Zen-inspired life philosophies, just prior to him ripping out a guy’s esophagus and dispatching all his enemies from God’s Green Missouri?

According to Grub Street, the still un-named mysterious bar/eatery will “be a Patrick-Swayze-in-Roadhouse feel (think: chicken wire), and the place is going to be ‘very mullet-friendly.’”

Blue Ribbon Sushi is Shuttering its Shutters

Via NY Eater

Or shuttering its louvered screens.  Or whatever those slatted things are.

There's a sign up on the door of Blue Ribbon Sushi announcing that the restaurant will be closing when their lease is up on March 1, and that the sushi operation will move next door to Blue Ribbon Brasserie.  So, if you're a fan of Blue Ribbon Sushi, maybe this is kind of a good news/bad news kind of thing.  Or, maybe it's just a bad news/bad news kind of thing.

For a long time, Blue Ribbon Brasserie has been one of the best places in Park Slope to get a good, really-nice-but-not-too-schmancy American meal in Park Slope.  And every time I go there, it's always crowded as hell, even after all these years.  The addition of Blue Ribbon Sushi to the already cramped Blue Ribbon Brasserie space is only going to make the Brasserie more crowded. And Blue Ribbon Sushi was a great space and a really good restaurant in its own right.  With plenty of other options for sushi in the slope, Blue Ribbon Sushi stands out as pretty high-end in a very well-designed space.  Even if the same great sushi will be available next door, it just won't be the same.

Photo via the L Magazine

I can't say I blame 'em. The eggplant parm ($8) is one of the best I've ever had.

If you haven't yet been, Zito's is located at 300 7th Avenue (718 499 2800). They're open daily from 11AM-10PM.
