[My Favorite Park Slope...]: Breakfast Hot Dog
I'm a big proponent of non-traditional breakfast foods. Fuck poached eggs. In my book, lasagna, pulled pork, pizza and mac 'n' cheese are all delicious breakfast foods. But no food is better for breakfast, in my humble opinion, than a delicious, well-appointed hot dog.
I frequently crave hot dogs for breakfast, and in Park Slope, there is nowhere better to satiate that craving than at Bark. Bark has a breakfast menu (eggs, hash browns, blah, blah, blah), but here's the big secret...you can order off of their regular menu all day long! Meaning, you can show up when they open at 10 a.m. and order a pickle dog (brined spears and dill pickle slices!) and chili cheese fries. Or, you can get a dog with kraut and a side of onion rings. Or, you can even get a burger, which FiPS recommends on foursquare. I have not yet tried this because I'm too busy eating their incredible hot dogs.
Also, you're probably pretty cranky in the morning, so you'll be pleased to know that Bark doesn't court controversy by serving ketchup on any of their signature hot dogs. Sure, at Bark you can specifically order ketchup for your hot dog...if you're a giant fucking baby who doesn't know the proper condiments for a frank. But it's gratifying to see that they aren't encouraging you to ruin one of their delicious hot dogs by smearing ketchup all over it.
Actually, Bark's hot dogs are the best in the area at any time of day. Their dogs are made by Hartmann's Old World Sausage, an upstate purveyor of Austrian-style wursts. They baste them in lard butter. Yeah. So, um...not kosher, but fuck it. These hot dogs are so good, you'll have a religious experience, just the same. God'll give you a pass on this one, I'm sure.
Truth be told, I don't really even know where else in the Slope you can get a hot dog at any time of day, let alone for breakfast. Is there a Nathan's on 3rd Avenue? I know that Willie's Dawgs has been closed for a while. You can get the hot dog special at Costco, but that's not actually in the Slope. It doesn't matter. Even if there's somewhere else in the neighborhood that serves hot dogs for breakfast, they're not going to be able to compete with Bark. It just can't be done.
My only quibble: Opening at 10 a.m? Some of us have to get to work earlier than that, you know?
