The green roof had actually been planned as part of the original construction, in order to get the Barclays a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certification. Since they were able to get certified without it, the green roof was put on hold. Because, you know, why go above and beyond when you don’t have to? But why now? “It was the right time to introduce this concept as an amenity for all of the residents that will be surrounding the arena, and for people of the community,” said Forest City Ratner spokeswoman Ashley Cotton.
And if you’re excited at the prospect of running around beautifully lush grass on the Barclay’s rooftop, get un-excited. The green roof will be strictly “look but don’t touch.”
There is no timetable for construction but it is expected to take nine months and require three cranes. Forest City Ratner is partnering with Chinese-government-owned Greenland on the project. Greenland is becoming a player in the area’s development, snatching up any property they can get their hands on. Plus, they just have a great name for working on this rooftop project, don’t they?
