A Beer Floodtastic FiPS Food & Drink Roundup
OMG TODAY IS THE 200TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE GREAT LONDON BEER FLOOD! That's right...on this day in 1814, a huge ass vat at a brewery in central London totally exploded, releasing thousands upon thousands of liters of beer upon the sad, surrounding tenements, drowning eight Brits. As such, I've got alcohol on the mind today. Also, it's a weekday.
You should have alcohol on the mind too! This past week, Park Slope saw its options for getting blotto expand, with even more options on the horizon. On a sadder note, we got OFFICIAL confirmation that one of the better locations for drinking in the hood really IS going to get a lil bit lamer.
The biggest news on the drunky front is news that's been a long time coming. Almost eight months after they first opened their doors, Calexico FINALLY has their liquor license. JESUS CHRISTO that took forever. They started serving beverages from their full bar last Friday but they’re "officially announcing" it starting tomorrow. To celebrate, they're doing two-for-one drinks all weekend long, with 10% of the proceeds from your drunkenness going to the Prospect Park Alliance. Also…TACOS.
In the immediate area around Park Slope, while there are a shitload of places to drink, the closest breweries are Other Half in Carroll Gardens & KelSo up in Clinton Hill. Since it's bullshit that those two areas have breweries & Parkwanus doesn't, next month three dudes plan on opening the aptly-named Threes Brewing at 333 Douglass between 3rd & 4th. It'll be a 5,000-square-foot space with a large outdoor area, coffee in the morning hours, food & live music on top of freshly-brewed beer. They've also got pedigree going for them, as one of the owners is Justin Israelson, who also co-owns Ditmas Park’s beloved Sycamore.
Hey (mostly male) gays! Rejoice! Excelsior is coming back! Yesterday the long-time Park Slope fixture, which shuttered in August, announced on their Facebook page that they're moving down 5th Ave between 15th & 16th to a spot last occupied by a dry cleaner. It's larger and has a backyard, so it looks like it may actually be better than the previous incarnation. Now we just have to get gay men to actually travel to South Slo...oh wait. Never mind.
It's no mistake that Park Slope is ebola-level-infested with places to hang out late night. This week, Gothamist did some actual pseudo-journalism, releasing Health Department-derived maps detailing which NYC hoods have the most late night options for food & drink. As was to be expected, Park Slope ranked relatively high in most categories, with 304 restaurant/bars, 18 of which are open til 4am & 35 of which are open 24 hours a day. In case you're wondering what places are open in the wee hours, you can reference the TOTALLY OUTDATED guide to late night junk that I put together back in 2011.
Finally, as we mentioned last week, Here's Park Slope reported that Two Boots would be taking over the space recently vacated by Terroir. Just yesterday, Gogo Gowanus…er…Park Slope Stoop shared a photo of the new signage that Two Boots had just slapped up on the storefront. As of yesterday, they've yet to bother taking down the Terroir signage but I guess this confirms the rumor. Awesome.
