Grocery Store Comedy Throwdown: Trader Joes vs. Whole Foods

It seems like the big trend this week in Brooklyn comedy involves poking fun at Trader Joe's and Whole Foods. In the first corner, we have comedy troupe Dollar Pizza mocking devotees of Trader Joe's who cannot shut up about their love for TJ's:

WHASSUP: TO DO EDITION

fHappy Day, Fipsters! I hope this post finds you well. Have you reached your Hamptons quota for the season yet? Sat in enough traffic to consider selling your car? Consider, for a moment, taking my advice on some local outings that demand little forethought, or travel time. Save your road rage for another day and patronize our fair neighborhood and surrounding areas.

There’s great new stuff popping up all over the place, from eateries to performance venues, to roller-skating with a view. Hell, Gowanus is a couple churros and one good mascot away from turning into Disney World. Mickey Swamp Monster? I’ll work on it.

At this point you’re most likely wondering what is up? This is WHASSUP:

Thursday, 7/31, Beetlejuice, Pier 1 Brooklyn Bidge Park: Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice—shut your mouth. Your favorite ghoulish playboy is about to conjured up in all his late 80’s glory. Come Mr. Tally Man, tally me banana…would you? FREE, 6pm

Thursday, 7/31, Journey to the Stars, Pier 1 Brooklyn Bridge Park: Come for the movie, stay for the celestial show. It’s out of this—ah, forget it. Bring your own telescope (nerd), or use one of theirs to snag a glimpse of that great big universe Neil deGrasse Tyson keeps showing down our throats. FREE, 8:30pm-10:30pm

Friday, 8/1, Mariache Flor De Tolache, Barbés: All. Female. Mariachi Band. This would make my subway rides far more pleasing. $10, 10pm

I'm So Park Slope

Image via NY Observer

Unless you've been living under a social media rock, you've probably noticed the I'm So (insert hometown here) meme that's blown up on Facebook and Twitter over the past few weeks. We thought we'd ask Roshow, our resident born and raised Slopie, to take a stab at our fair neighborhood.

I’m so Park Slope I bought my drugs at Al’s Toyland.

I’m so Park Slope I call South Slope “Sunset Park.”

I’m so Park Slope I got my Starter cap jacked walking by the Old Stone House.

I’m so Park Slope my pea shooters were made from quarter waters bought at Benny’s.

I’m so Park Slope Steve Buscemi spots me.

Meet The Ball Man of Prospect Park

If you run, walk, bike around the Prospect Park loop on the regular, you may have encountered the Ball Man. While almost everybody else is following the unwritten rule of running/walking/biking counter-clockwise, the Ball Man defies conformity, kicking his big ball in the "wrong direction." FIPS reader Blake Eskin took some time to get to know the Ball Man:

Day after day, like Sisyphus, he rolls, tosses, and kicks a large playground ball around — and occasionally across — the Loop Road. The dark-red ball introduces more entropy into the early-morning exercise ecosystem than any of the other clockwise guys, and it elicits stronger reactions, including rage from runners who break their gait and cyclists concerned about a potential accident.

Cool or Not Cool: Saving A Parking Space With Railroad Ties

Last night, around 7 PM, I parked on Sixth Avenue between 4th and 5th Streets before meeting a friend for dinner. I'd been driving around for about five minutes looking for a place to park, when I saw a guy getting out and pulled up behind him to take the spot. When I pulled forward to back in, I noticed the spot in front of  it was occupied by two railroad ties, set parallel about 5 feet apart, basically, taking up the length and width of a car. I was in a rush to meet my friend, so didn't register much about it at the time.
