You Should Totally Come To This Free Storytelling Class Tomorrow Night

If you've ever gone to a Moth storySLAM -- which is the epicenter of competitive storytelling -- it's pretty epic SLASH intimidating. The first time I put my name in the hat for a chance to tell a 5-minute story onstage I freaked out, drank too many gin & tonics and accidentally got wasted (luckily my name wasn't pulled from the hat that night or I may have vomited on the host's shoes).

If you're interested in the art of storytelling, but have let fear of complete vulnuerability and subsequent judgement of complete strangers hinder you, look no further for some advice on how to *not* completely suck at this age-old artform.

I've paired up with fellow storyteller (and Park Slope resident) Andy Ross and community-based organization Brooklyn Skillshare to teach a free class called How to Be a Great Storyteller (and Other Useful and Humorous Public Speaking Techniques). Between Andy and myself, we've written for The Onion News Network, Comedy Central's Indecision Forever blog, Mad Magazine and hold the prestigious title of "Moth storySLAM winner." OK, so those are only Andy's credits, but I once came clean about chapstick addiction on Kevin Allison's Risk! podcast.

Here's why you should come: we'll teach you how to draw from personal experiences to find your own stories, how to construct a strong beginning, middle and end, and how to prepare your story for the stage. AND you'll walk away with a great list of open mics and storytelling shows in the city. I might even bake cookies.

Here are the deets:

WHEN: Tuesday, January 10th @ 7:30PM

WHERE: The Tea Lounge (837 Union, near 7th ave)

COST: Free!

TAUGHT BY: Andy Ross (creator and host of the storytelling show Real Characters) and Kerri Doherty (creator and host of the storySLAM I Like You, Maude)
