[What You Should Order At...] Katsuei

Those of us who mourned the passing of Blue Ribbon Sushi have longed for the return of a wicked rice paddler to our hood.  Now enter Sushi Katsuei (FIGHT!), a sushi joint giving us an authentic Japanese dining experience. (Really, one of their main sushi chefs commutes daily from Jersey, which I think is closer to Japan then Brooklyn.) They've taken over the space at 7th Ave. and 3rd Street, most recently occupied by Casa Ventura .

The menu offers a deep selection of Sashimi and sushi, including treats like Anago (sea eel) and a fresh-beyond-belief Otoro (fatty tuna).  They also make some rolls, appetizers, soups, and salads, for those looking to create your own edible fantasy.

I have one recommendation for this place: Just go balls deep and do the Chef's Choice Omakase. Sit at the counter, watch the masters at work, ask stupid fish questions, and engage the chefs, I promise you they'll appreciate your Gaijin ways. Then watch as they create a feast lasting about an hour head to tail, including incredibly fresh sashimi, moan-inducing sushi, and a hand roll that wraps up the meal with a complex set of flavors that made me want another one.  Which is A-OK at Katsuei, because the chef will ask you if you've had enough to eat. Seriously. If not yet full, you fat American, then order another piece. But don't be a douche thinking it's an all-you-can eat joint. This is a mildly fancy establishment, so just request your favorite item and thank the Chef with a loud "Oishii!"

Since their opening, they have had a pretty steady crowd, so make a reservation if you want your time and day at the counter to be guaranteed. Finally, be prepare to inevitably sit next to that guy or gal who "lived in Japan" and knows all things Nippon, but has never heard of Mitsuwa Market in Jersey.  Just give them a look, eat your sushi, and roll your eyes back in your head in pleasure. The staff will thank you for your exuberance.  Note: At this time, they have not secured a liquor license, so its BYOB.  We drank 3 bottles of sake easily (with a group of 5) during the Omakase.  You can do the same, or hop to the MET market a block away and grab your libations.  Enjoy.
