WHASSUP: TAIL END EDITION

Well, folks, it’s getting to the tail end of a glorious summer, packed with great events and gorgeous weather. I implore you not to waste these waning days of outdoor barbecues, beers on the roof, concerts in the park, and weekend adventures because winter is just aching to swing in and kick NYC right in the dick.

This week has it all: music, food, comedy, and even some learning. You can’t go wrong with anything on this list so pick and choose wisely in your search for entertainment. It’s gonna be a good one.

So, WHASSUP, you ask for the umtienth time? Here’s WHASSUP:

Thursday, 8/21, Storewide Tasting Night, Whole Foods BK: Come hungry! Last week, on a food run for meatless balls and store brand coconut popsicles, I had the pleasure of stumbling upon the weekly Thursday tasting night. It was a food bonanza. I threw my list out the window and treated Whole Foods like an all you can eat buffet. FREE, 5pm-6pm

Friday, 8/22, Forty-Six Candles: An Evening in Which John Hughes Characters Grow the Fuck Up, Union Hall: John Hughes was responsible for some pretty prolific characters in movie history. This parody gives you a look at your favorite characters all growed-up. Think the Breakfast Club, just overweight and menopausal. $8, 7:30pm doors, 8pm show

Saturday, 8/23, Afropunk After Dark: The Beautiful Noise Presents a Sun Ra Tribute, Littlefield: I’m more of an Avett Brothers kind of guy, but I feel it’s important to introduce you, my little lambs, to myriad genres. Afropunk is way outside my wheelhouse, and I won’t even begin to interpret it for you, but I’m thinking it could be a good time. 18-$22, 8pm

Sunday, 8/24, Gluten Free Takedown, The Bell House: Yes, it’s another gluten free event. It’s been brought to my attention that Gluten free isn’t just some fad diet (although you know it fucking is), but a way of life for many who suffer through a number of digestive diseases. Therefore I present you with a delicious cook-off to challenge to creatively and tantalize your taste buds. $20, 2pm

Monday, 8/25, Ample Hills Creamery, Union St., Gowanus: This is the latest, an perhaps my favorite, in a series of Gowanus outcroppings. It’s a fucking double-decker ice cream shop. Is there anything else you need to know? Sun-Thurs noon-11pm, Fri+Sat noon-midnight

Tuesday, 8/26, The History of Gin, Brooklyn Brainery: My personal history with gin has been sordid, but perhaps this class will shed new light on some unfortunate circumstances and projectile vomit—salty dog anyone? Gin is definitely one of those love/hate spirits that aptly numb the mind, causing the user to amass a list of bad decisions. $14, 6:30pm-8pm

Wednesday, 8/27, Weet Lee and Co. Jazz, Freddy’s Bar: Lee Odem has an impressive resume and mad skills on the drums. Why cram into a crowded, over-priced jazz club in town when we have this gem at our disposal? This is serious jazz at it's best.  FREE, 9pm
